Using the Nexus 7: The Kindle Fire's got something to fear

7 hrs.

Google's Nexus 7 is a strange device. At 7?inches, it's smaller than an iPad ??and a breadbox, for that matter ??and with its impressive spec list, it's a bit more appealing than the similarly low-priced Kindle Fire. But how does it hold up in person?

Surprisingly well.

While?I cringe when I cradle the Kindle Fire's clunky body,?the Nexus 7 feels perfectly balanced and secure in my hand. It's a solid device?? the unit I'm using survived several awkward drops off a table's edge ? and it looks sleek.

On the inside, the Nexus 7 has a quad-core processor, a twelve-core GPU and 1 GB of RAM. Between that hardware and Project Butter???under-the-hood improvements which keep?Jelly Bean running particularly?smoothly?? the tablet's pretty darn speedy. (For more about Jelly Bean, check out?our rundown of its best features.)

When Google announced the Nexus 7, it pushed its content consumption features ? especially?a widget which collects books, magazines, TV shows, movies and music. It's an appealing tool and, like most things on the Nexus 7, it is consistently smooth and brisk.

I've only used the Nexus 7 for a couple of days now, but I already dread returning home and reaching for a Kindle Fire. I know that it'll feel slow, clunky, and unsatisfying in comparison.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

(AP) ? A military judge will decide Friday whether to further delay the trial of the Army psychiatrist charged in the deadly 2009 Fort Hood shootings.

Maj. Nidal Hasan's attorneys want his court-martial delayed from August until December, saying they need more time to prepare.

The murder trial earlier was set for March and then June.

Hasan faces the death penalty if convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.

At a hearing last week, the judge barred Hasan from the courtroom because he's grown a beard ? a violation of Army regulations. Hasan will watch hearings and his trial on a closed-circuit television in a nearby room until he shaves.

Hasan's attorneys say he grew the beard as an expression of his Islamic faith.

The Pros and Cons of Online College Degrees

Having a college degree program from online has its own benefits. We can observe this benefit through the money we can save, flexibility of time, and also in physical location. While these are true, there may be just a few disadvantages. This includes limited instructor interaction and tendency to procrastinate. Take your time reading and absorbing them.

THE PROS:

Savings ? what could be more convenient than having an online college degree program for less? Having an online degree program saves you considerable cost because the lessons are online. Physical books take up the bulk of education costs. Imagine the financial savings you could have because the information you get from those books are already at your fingers tips. Tuition fees are also minimal in comparison to conventional schools where you contribute for the use of school facilities and miscellaneous matters. Also having online colleges financial aid makes availing of online programs much compared to conventional schooling.

Location ? this is a very obvious advantage for any online college degree program. Imagine the hassle and hustle of traveling to school every day. This benefits those who are living in remote or country areas who don?t want to commute or move to big cities just to attend college. Even if you are in other parts of the world, you have access to any online degree program.

Time ? is an important element on every academic endeavor. Because we are living in a fast-paced environment, it is liberating to know that there is an available scheme for someone who wants to get a college degree in the schedule and time that he wants. The greatest benefit to time is that you can get your degree and work at the same time.

THE CONS:

Less instructor-student interaction ? a downside to taking online degrees is that it deals less with instructor interaction. This is a disadvantage especially in matters where you have not fully understood the basics principles of some lessons or topics. Interaction with your instructor can help deepen your understanding about certain topics. However, this is offset by instructor interaction scheduled talks, online chats, regular e-mails, or social networks.

Tendency to Procrastinate if student is lacking self-discipline ? the convenience of online education can have a drawback if the student is lacking in self-discipline since there are no physical school authority figures to follow-up your progress. The tendency then is to feel relaxed. However, if you are motivated enough to earn your degree in the fastest time possible and reap the benefits in the future, submission of assigned work and projects should be no question to you.

Looking at the pros and cons, one can safely say that the cons can be easily surmounted by the self. Seeing and reaping the benefits of the pros is enough motivation for anyone to finish their online degree education.

John Creasy a passionate writer about online college programs. He has additional information online at college degree program He recommends to read and study further about online colleges financial aid.

Former Gov. Owens: President Obama's Waldo Canyon tour "ill-advised"

Former Governor Bill Owens (Denver Post file photo)

?Former Gov. Bill Owens called President Obama's planned tour of the Waldo Canyon fire area "ill-advised" today, saying it will divert resources from what should be the top priority ? fighting the fire.

Owens was governor during the 2002 Hayman fire, which is still the largest in Colorado history. When then-President Bush's staff called about a potential visit, he said, Owens respectfully asked them not to come.

"I know what goes into a presidential visit, and I have quite a bit of background knowledge on what goes into fighting these fires," Owens said. "And the two should rarely meet."

Owens also posted on his Facebook page that he considered the visit too distracting.

Obama is scheduled to

target="http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_20951895/president-obama-tour-waldo-canyon-fire-friday">tour the fire area in Colorado Springs on Friday. A White House official said the president and his team are sensitive to ensuring his visits to any emergency response area do not impede the response, and that they will take the same precautions Friday.

The official also said Obama looks forward to thanking first responders and seeing for himself if additional resources are necessary.

Gov. John Hickenlooper was not immediately available for comment.

He told CNN last night, however, that during a phone call with Obama the president asked if it would be useful if he came for a visit. Hickenlooper told the president that he had flown to the area Tuesday night and that "person after person told me how glad they were that I was there."

"If they're that glad I'm there, if the president could find the time to be able to come by and show the support of the nation for all of these folks that have been evacuated, lost their homes," Hickenlooper said.

Owens, a Republican who left office in 2006, said he rarely weighs in on political issues these days, and that he has great respect for the office of the president and the job Hickenlooper is doing.

So, asked if Obama may have political motivations to visit a battleground state in a tight election year, Owens kept his response short.

"I bet the White House hasn't failed to notice that," he said.

One Summer, One Chance: Needs Locals! (M&F)

ONE SUMMER, ONE CHANCE ?

Claremont Ridge Orphanage. Existing since 1940.

Almost 75 years later, in the small town of Hamden, Connecticut, the Claremont Ridge Orphanage is still thriving as ever. Filled with children from 3 years old to as old as 17 years old, the orphanage is well known in the small area of Hamden. Like many other orphanages, the government serves as a vital benefactor. The orphanage isn't poor - not rich either - but isn't as bad as you would think it is. The children aren't treated horribly or beaten to death, like you would expect from movies or novels. However, everyone has assigned jobs and chores and expected to help out regularly. Everything aside, nobody is perfect; things may or may not happen behind the scenes- it all depends on your imagination.

With summer quickly approaching, and having children who have been in the orphanage since they were toddlers almost turning 18, Claremont was gifted with money to provide some of their children on a 2 months worth vacation at Hawaii. The others who were left behind were provided with other activities to do by the same person who donated the money. This benefactor, however, requested to remain anonymous. According to rumors, this specific person had been providing the institute with thousands of dollars since 2001. The truth be told, the benefactor has private matters with the founder of the orphanage and it's occupants. The purpose behind the benefactor's good deeds are unknown to all except certain staff members and faculty.

The truth is, the benefactor, almost 10 years ago, once had a daughter. He once lived as a happy family, married and settled away with a home, until the government had taken his child away from him. It caused his wife to divorce him, move away only days later, and life as he knew it to dwindle before his eyes. He was young back then, very, very young, and had trouble keeping his emotions to himself. Even worse, child abuse was regarded very seriously back then. His family was gone as soon as the neighbors had reported him, and left him to live alone. Since then, the man has tried everything he could to regain the family he'd lost back then. That's when he found his daughter residing at the Claremont Orphanage. The 10 years have been generous to him, and he found his status and class to become higher and higher. More than anything, since he'd found his daughter, he has been working hard to at least help her live life at the orphanage as comfortable as she can. Sadly, even today the government wouldn't let him contact her. Providing the orphanage with money for her, was the best he could do.

This put aside, a lucky few were able to participate in this month's worth vacation overseas. The participants were chosen from a lottery system set up by Mrs. Kirby*, the activity coordinator, and the anonymous benefactor. The vacation was at the benefactor's private island in Hawaii, rented and filled with locals for the summer. A certain part of the island was let off for the orphanage, but filled with other summer houses regardless. In a way, I guess you could say that this is the benefactor's gift to the orphans. Since the majority of them were leaving soon and into the real world, including his daughter, he wants them to experience life as a typical teenager. While living in an orphanage didn't stop them from acting as normal teens and having relationships, the circumstances they were forced to face weren't exactly normal. He has set up daily activities for every other day of the vacation, encourages them to live this time with no regrets and do things that they would have never done back in Connecticut.

Will the orphans start to see each other in a different light? Feelings may begin to sprout for each other as something more than just friends. Perhaps even between the locals staying on the island now that everything normal - for, at least, a little while. The generous benefactor may even decide to make an appearance during the vacation to face his daughter for the first time in years. And what will happen if some of the families staying on the island want to adopt one of the orphans? Well, only time will tell.

*Mrs. Kirby will be controlled by either myself or theMoonlightTheory as she will be on the trip as well.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Scientists could take greater strides toward crop improvement if there were wider adoption of advanced techniques used to understand the mechanisms that allow plants to adapt to their environments, current and former Purdue University researchers say.

In a perspective for the journal Science, Brian Dilkes, a Purdue assistant professor of genetics, and Ivan Baxter, a research computational biologist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service, argue that today's technology could allow scientists to match physiological and genetic characteristics of plants with the soil characteristics that promote or inhibit their growth. Making those connections could reduce the time necessary to improve plants that are coping with changing environmental and climatic conditions.

"Evolution has solved the problems that we face in terms of adapting plants to grow in a multitude of environments," Dilkes said. "If we understand these processes, we'll be able to apply that knowledge to maintaining diversity in natural systems and improving and maintaining crop yield."

The majority of a plant's makeup, besides carbon dioxide, comes from elements and minerals absorbed from the soil as the plant grows. The physiological and genetic mechanisms that allow plants to obtain iron from the soil, for instance, can also cause the plant to accumulate other elements. Understanding how those changes interact is an important piece of improving plants, Baxter said.

"This is just a hint of the complexity that's out there," said Baxter, a former post-doctoral researcher at Purdue who works for the USDA at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis. "If we're going to make the necessary improvements in agricultural productivity, we will have to move forward with these techniques."

Much of the work done to understand how plants have adapted to their environments focuses on one gene and one element it controls at a time. Pinpointing one or more genes responsible for a particular trait can take years, even decades.

Dilkes and Baxter believe a wider adoption of molecular phenotyping techniques, such as ionomics and genome-wide association mapping, could allow scientists to work with multiple elements and genes at once.

"By focusing on one gene or one element at a time, you miss out on the other physiological mechanisms occurring in the plant," Dilkes said. "The potential to broaden our understanding of these complex interactions and have a dramatic effect on agriculture is there."

Genome-wide association mapping allows scientists to find genetic associations among multiple phenotypes, or physical traits. The process quickly shows which genes may be responsible for the physical characteristics.

Ionomics studies the elemental composition of plants and how those compositions change in response to environmental or genetic changes.

"Experiments with thousands of samples are now possible," Baxter said. "We've just started to put these things together."

    Why Did Roberts Do It?

The lineup was a shocker: Roberts joined the court?s four moderate/liberal justices in upholding the act. Court-watchers knew Roberts would be in the majority, whichever way the case came out, but we expected Justice Anthony Kennedy to be there, too. He wasn?t: Kennedy joined fellow conservative Justices Scalia, Thomas, and Alito in a vehement (and?departing from court practice?jointly signed) dissent. Indeed, the chief justice was the only justice who cast a vote on the individual mandate that was contrary to the political position of the party of the president who appointed him.

Archbishop Lori Tells Rome Conference That Religious Freedom Must Be Defended

Courtesy of the Diocese of Bridgeport

    Archbishop William Lori

? Courtesy of the Diocese of Bridgeport

ROME ? Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore told the inaugural gathering at the Religious Liberty Observatory in Rome June 28 that the U.S. government?s ?attempt to tell the Church which of our institutions seem religious to the state is profoundly offensive.?

The archbishop, in Rome to receive the pallium from Pope Benedict XVI June 29 on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, said that unless it is stopped now, the government?s ?narrow definition? of what a church is ?will spread throughout our nation?s laws and policies.?

Archbishop Lori also said the struggle for religious freedom in the United States will continue, even if the Supreme Court strikes down the Affordable Care Act today.

The Religious Liberty Observatory was established in 2012 by the Italian government and the city of Rome.

The archbishop, chairman of the U.S. bishops? Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty, has been a major force behind the Fortnight for Freedom campaign that focuses on religious liberty. He spoke with Rome correspondent Edward Pentin today.

    ?

The Fortnight for Freedom is now half over. How is it going so far?

My impression is that it?s going quite well. Certainly, the kickoff was a wonderful event, if I may say so myself ? just because so many people came, and there was so much enthusiasm, so much good coverage. So that was good. Cardinal [Donald] Wuerl had a wonderful gathering at George Washington University the following Sunday. There are about 90 dioceses that have posted on the USCCB website very full activities, so my impression is it?s making an impact.

    ?

Can you explain to anyone who may think this campaign isn?t important why it is necessary to take such a stand at this time?

What was said here at the end was so true: Religious freedom is first compromised by intolerance, and if we simply let it pass, allow the government to say, ?You were tolerable only if you define yourself as a worshipping community, only if you define it as freedom of worship, but you are not tolerable otherwise,? then we are simply heading towards the road of real religious persecution, of really becoming fatally compromised in our ability to speak freely and act freely. So I think it?s important to try to nip it in the bud.

    ?

It?s said the Church?s natural state is to be under a state of persecution. Would you say this dispute, in a strange way, is a good sign, that the Church is being prophetic in a world that is never going to fully accept it?

The Lord promised us nothing less than persecution, so we should expect that it?s going to happen. Indeed, it has happened consistently throughout the Church?s history. Persecution takes various forms. It can be the brutal type, the subtle type; it can be under the shroud of law and civility. When the Church is persecuted, it seems, to me, people begin to suddenly look at their faith, and many people value their faith more; and many people will realize how precious their faith is. So I think many lay Catholics have told me how happy they are to see how united the bishops are and how resolute they are, and I think that can only be good for our Church.

    ?

The other argument is that the Church has not done enough in the past to prevent this, that priests and bishops haven?t upheld the Church?s teaching on contraception, for example, as well as they might have done. Is this a natural consequence of that?

Our opponents have cleverly chosen a wedge issue. They know it?s not a popular teaching, it hasn?t been well defended, and so, by trying to make it a fight about contraception, they are using it as a wedge to open the door to greater violations to religious liberty. It might be a wonderful moment ? it is a wonderful moment ? for us to step back and say, ?Why didn?t we teach what we teach?? Isn?t our teaching on life issues, on the sacredness of human life and its origins, a further demonstration ? maybe the primary demonstration ? of our teaching on the dignity of the person endowed by rights from God? It all kind of hangs together, you know.

    ?

With the decision on the HHS contraception mandate, if it does get voted down, could this administration lose the election?

I don?t know. I?m not a good political analyst, and you?ll have to ask someone else who knows that reality of life. I don?t know what the political consequences will be. I think our concern is really to defend religious liberty. That?s what we?re really concerned about, and that?s what we?ll be really looking at if this comes down. If the whole bill is struck down, we will still maintain our position: There should be universal access to health care. It should have conscience rights in it ? it should not involve using tax dollars for abortion.

    ?

And if it passes, will you step up your campaign?

We?ll continue; we?ll stay the course, hopefully with great energy.

    ?

What does it mean for you to be here to receive the pallium?

It?s a wonderful experience; just being in Rome is always a wonderful experience. But to receive this sign of communion and pastoral love at the hands of the Holy Father will be an amazing and awe-inspiring experience and a humbling one that I hope will strengthen me in my service as a bishop of the Church.

Planning a Home Improvement Project | Manhattan Home Inspection

What is your ultimate goal? What is your budget? What is your timeline?

Before you select any contractor for a project, such as the myriad professionals from http://www.247pro.com, you need to determine exactly who you need. Contractors are like other professionals, they specialize in certain areas. Some are experts at outdoor projects, other indoor projects, such as bathrooms and kitchens. Some do it all, with specialty departments.

It?s important to know what your ultimate goal is; just a simple ?redo? of something you have now, or a full remodel? By doing research first ? creating your ?dream? result ? you may be surprised at what you can accomplish on a given budget. As an example, in a kitchen, if you are thinking about repairing or replacing just a few items, what savings are available for a more extensive remodel? The costs and requirements of doing some basic work may make it affordable to do more extensive work for a small amount more, with a much greater result.

It?s always best to dream big, and then scale your project to fit your budget as you refine your thoughts. You never know how one piece is tied to another, making savings possible.

Understanding timelines is important. Home improvement projects often require things you may not have considered, such as city or county permits, safety and quality inspections, and the availability of materials.

What may appear to be a project of a day or so more realistically may take more time because of coordination necessary between government agencies, materials suppliers, and labor for specialty work.

A successful project is one which is planned along a timeline, allowing for time consuming parts of the project and the arrival of materials. Once everything is in place, it is important to have the time to do things right the first time, without undue pressure to finish in a hurry because of outside influences.

Planning a home improvement project before a big event, such as a wedding or anniversary, needs to include planning for the entire project to be completed well before the arrival of guests. Home improvement projects are permanent improvements, and you want them to be done well, and to your satisfaction. This includes time at the end for any tweaking which may be necessary for last minute inspirations.

'But wait, there's more': Ginsu knife pitch co-creator dies

(AP Photo)When Ed Valenti went to meet Barry Becher for the first time, he drove to the meeting in his 1972 orange Datsun 240Z. When he arrived at his destination, he parked his car next to another 1972 Datsun 240Z, also in orange.

"And I got out of the car and I said, 'Well, this guy obviously has class,'" Valenti recalled.

That other car was Becher's. From then on, the two became fast friends and business partners, and developed an enormously successful marketing business that changed the way products were sold on television.

Even though they went on to sell numerous products, their most identifiable pitch is probably the infomercial for the Ginsu knife, featuring the iconic, unforgettable phrase, "But wait, there's more."

Becher had been suffering from kidney cancer and died June 22 at a Florida hospital of complications from surgery. He was 71.

In an interview Thursday with ABCNews.com, Valenti reflected on the legacy he and Becher had created.

"We wanted to sell products and we were having a great time. We didn't realize at that time we were changing history," he said.

Becher had owned AAMCO transmission franchises in Rhode Island, and Valenti was an account executive for an NBC station in that area.

Their first infomercial - for the Miracle Painter - delivered far beyond their expectations, especially because the big advertising firms on Madison Avenue had all passed on the pair's concept. So they produced it themselves.

"And we put a man painting the ceiling in a tuxedo. Can you think of a better way to explain no-drip?" Valenti asked.

They sold 1 million Miracle Painters at $10 each.

In the course of a decade, the men said they amassed more than $500 million in sales. Another product - Armourcote - was their most profitable, but Ginsu remains the most widely known.

Millions were sold from the commercial's debut in 1978 into the early 1980s, with audiences mesmerized by images of an exotic-sounding knife that seemed able to cut through anything. The infomercial promised a 50-year guarantee and "much, much more."

Sam Craig, a marketing professor at New York University's Stern School of Business, said Ginsu stands apart from most other infomercial products because it was popular for so long and it had common sales methods that are used to this day.

"They're taking these things that were done at state fairs and carnivals where it could be demonstrated to a group of maybe 10, now you could demonstrate the same thing to a million people or more at the same time," Craig said. "And it takes something that's relatively mundane and makes it appear dramatic."

The impact of their sales style on popular culture has been significant. The Ginsu knife commercial has been spoofed on "Saturday Night Live" and comedians, including Jerry Seinfeld and Gallagher, have all had fun with the concept.

"Every joke-teller [is] using, 'But wait , there's more,' 'How much would you pay?' and all the literary classics that we wrote," Valenti said.

"It takes something like this, a tragedy, to make me realize we did as a team accomplish something and made a contribution and really changed the face of direct marketing," he said. "Did we start out knowing that? No. Was there a lot of forethought, that we woke up in the morning and said, 'We're going to change the way people buy things on TV?' We just didn't know. We had an idea. We tried it, it worked ? "

Becher was a special kind of businessman, Valenti said.

"He was a guy that truly put himself in other people's shoes, and because of that he was able to be very empathetic, very entrepreneurial and very businesslike, all in the same breath, and that's rare," he said.

Becher and Valenti eventually shifted their business to become mainly a media buying firm, PriMedia, but their legacy was sealed. They helped popularize the use of credit cards and 800-numbers for over-the-TV sales and their work is seen as a precursor to extended 30-minute infomercials and round-the-clock shopping channels, including Home Shopping Network.

Becher retired in 2005, the same year he and Valenti published their book, "The Wisdom of Ginsu."

Click HERE to read an excerpt from "The Wisdom of Ginsu."

Becher was the godfather to Valenti's daughter, Erin. Although he was Jewish, Valenti, who is Catholic, received special dispensation from the church so Becher could baptize his daughter.

He last talked to Becher a few months ago.

"I'm deeply saddened by the fact that I didn't have a chance to say goodbye to my friend and to tell him how much everyone loved him," Valenti said.

Becher's funeral was Monday. His family is considering etching on his tombstone, "But wait, there's more."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

New Zealanders 50 years and older plagued with worry about ...

    By Amanda Morrall

Ageing New Zealanders, even those who plan to be debt free by 65, say they are worried about having insufficient income in retirement despite the comfort of a government pension and private savings.

That was the finding of a survey of 600 Kiwis aged 50 or older conducted by the community website GrownUps.

While 90% of survey respondents say they were working to become debt free by retirement, almost a quarter admitted they wouldn't meet their target. Of those that would be free, most said they would struggle to meet their living costs.

Grown-ups co-founder Richard Poole said the survey results drove home some harsh economic realities as well as the need for retirees to be "extra cautious" with money through their retirement.

Poole said retirees today and those 10-15 years off of leaving paid employment would be forced to become more creative about funding their retirement, either adjusting their lifestyles and curtailing spending or downsizing their primary residence to generate more capital.

Of those surveyed, more than 75% did not believe pension entitlements through the New Zealand Superannuation would cover their basic living costs. And 40% did not believe they had enough to last in retirement. This despite that the fact that the majority had begun saving for retirement at age 40 to 45. (To look up the current rates for NZS click here).

Poole said the savings picture that emerged from the survey did not bode well for future generations who are now expected to start saving for retirement during their 20s or as soon as they took up full time employment.

"This is a real challenge for future generations as there are the costs associated with buying first homes, growing families and life experience to contend with ? no one is thinking about retirement at 25,? said Poole.?

Roughly a third of respondents reported having suffered financial setbacks after investing in finance companies.

KiwiSaver was tagged as one of the main sources of retirement income for 41% of the respondents.?Ninety percent opted into KiwiSaver out of choice, and more than 50% of people contribute 4% of their annual income towards their KiwiSaver fund. A further 44% of contributors plan to make voluntary contributions to their KiwiSaver funds.

    Additional findings.

??45% of respondents are enrolled in KiwiSaver

??46% of people plan to take their money out of KiwiSaver as soon as they turn 65

??63% of people regularly check the balance of their KiwiSaver account

Eats bark, fruit and leaves: diet of ancient human

"We are, effectively, looking back 2 million years and watching our ancestors chew their food," says Lee Berger.

A palaeontologist at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, he shot to scientific stardom in 2010 when he discovered Australopithecus sedibaMovie Camera, one of the most remarkable fossils of the hominin lineage known to date.

Now he, Amanda Henry of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, and a team of collaborators have discovered what A. sediba ate. On the menu: bark.

    A. sediba is known from two skeletons uncovered in South Africa. The species shares a mix of features seen in earlier australopithecines, modern humans and chimpanzees. It turns out that they had poor dental hygiene. From plaque on the fossils' teeth, the team extracted "phytoliths" ? mineral traces of A. sediba's food. They found signs of fruit, bark and woody tissues.

"That blew me away," says Berger. "I had never heard bark associated with what we ate before."

Primatologists were less surprised. "Bark represents a considerable fraction of orang-utan diets," says Madeleine Hardus of the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Other primates also chew on the hard stuff ? species from the golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) to chimpanzees eat bark when times are tough.

"It is really exciting that they were able to extract phytoliths from the dental calculus [plaque]," says Leslie Aiello, president of the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research in New York. "This is important information about detailed plant consumption in the hominins ? something that has been invisible to us."

    Hard evidence

Greater dietary surprises were in store for Berger and his colleagues though. The team looked at sediment samples and fossilised animal faeces ? coprolites ? to get an idea of what the environment in which A. sediba lived was like. They found remnants of savannah grasses in the sediment, and pollen and woody fragments in the coprolites suggested that there might have been some woodlands in the vicinity.

The team then looked at the carbon isotopes in A. sediba teeth to see what types of plants they ate. A "C4" signature is typical of savannah plants like grasses and the grains they carry. These plants fix carbon in a four-carbon molecule. "C3" indicates fruits and leaves foraged from a more forested environment.

The team expected a C4 signature ? it's what most hominins have and fits the evidence that A. sediba lived in an open savannah. They found the exact opposite. The results are fascinating, says Aiello. "The most important thing is that the diet of A. sediba was different from the diet of other early hominins."

Why A. sediba had such an unusual diet is still a mystery.

Henry suggests that A. sediba may have lived in small woodlands that lined bodies of water in the savannah. Its lifestyle may have been similar to savannah chimps, which travel long distances to forage the limited woodlands available to them.

"They may have been trying new things. We're getting an idea of what comes later when modern humans became so flexible that they could exploit almost any environment," she says.

To Berger one thing is clear: A. sediba was a picky eater ? and picky eaters are clever. "They had to be smart enough to select specific foods from their environment," he says.

    Quirky explanations

Could there be other explanations for why early humans consumed bark? Was it an early form of tooth-brushing, for instance? Or were they getting some kind of medicinal advantage from the barks they chose? Many animals are known to self-medicate. So we put these questions to the experts.

    A. sediba's teeth are covered in plaque, says Berger. If it brushed, it was really bad at it.

"A. sediba would have to play with its toothpick for several hours a day" for the traces of wood found by Berger's colleagues to accumulate, says Hardus. "The same applies to medication, which is supposedly only consumed sporadically ? unless A. sediba chewed on leaves or bark very much like tobacco leaves today."

It looks as if our ancestors were just after a meal then.
