Cancer Society hits 100 as US cancer rate falls

NEW YORK (AP) ? The American Cancer Society ? one of the nation's best known and influential health advocacy groups ? is 100 years old this week.

Back in 1913 when it was formed, cancer was a lesser threat for most Americans. The biggest killers then were flu, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and stomach bugs. At a time when average life expectancy was 47, few lived long enough to get cancer.

But 15 doctors and businessmen in New York City thought cancer deserved serious attention, so they founded the American Society for the Control of Cancer. The modern name would come 31 years later.

The cancer society's rise coincided with the taming of infectious diseases and lengthening life spans. "Cancer is a disease of aging, so as people live longer there will be more cancer," explained Dr. Michael Kastan, executive director of Duke University's Cancer Institute.

Cancer became the nation's No. 2 killer in 1938, a ranking it has held ever since. It also became perhaps the most feared disease ? the patient's own cells growing out of control, responding only to brutal treatments: surgery, radiation and poisonous chemicals.

The cancer society is credited with being the largest and most visible proponent of research funding, prevention and programs to help house and educate cancer patients.

Last year, the organization had revenues of about $925 million. It employs 6,000 and has 3 million volunteers, calling itself the largest voluntary health organization in the nation.

"The American Cancer Society really is in a league of its own," Kastan said. The rate of new cancer cases has been trending downward ever so slightly.

Some historical highlights:

1913 ? The American Society for the Control of Cancer is founded in New York City.

1944 ? The organization is renamed the American Cancer Society. The change is spurred by Mary Lasker, the wife of advertising mogul Albert Lasker.

1946 ? A research program is launched, built on $1 million raised by Mary Lasker. A year later, Dr. Sidney Farber of Boston announces the first successful chemotherapy treatment.

1948 ? The cancer society pushes the Pap test, which has been credited with driving a 70 percent decline in uterine and cervical cancer.

1964 ? Prodded by the cancer society and other groups, U.S. Surgeon General Luther Terry issues a report irrefutably linking smoking to cancer.

1971 ? The cancer society helps lead passage of the National Cancer Act to ramp up research money. President Nixon declares a national "war on cancer," which becomes an extended effort derided by some as a "medical Vietnam."

1976 ? The cancer society suggests women 40 and older consider a mammogram if their mother or sisters had breast cancer.

1976 ? The cancer society hosts a California event to encourage smokers to quit for the day. A year later, the annual Great American Smokeout is launched nationally.

1988 ? Atlanta becomes headquarters for the society.

1997 ? The cancer society recommends yearly mammograms for women over 40.

2000 ? Dr. Brian Druker of Oregon reports the first success with "targeted" cancer therapy.

2003 ? The cancer society stops recommending monthly breast self-exams. But it continues to urge annual mammograms for most women over 40, even after a government task force says most don't need screening until 50.

2012 ? The cancer society reports the rate of new cancer cases has been inching down by about half a percent each year since 1999.

Ocean Reef Club Wins Worksite Wellness Award

Ocean Reef Club, a private, member-owned community in Key Largo, Fla., has won a Florida Worksite Wellness Award. Ocean Reef was the winner in the mid-size employer category, for businesses with 500 to 1,000 employees.

The program honors Florida companies that demonstrate a commitment to employee wellness and whose programs produce positive health outcomes.

The award was presented by the Florida Heart Research Institute, in partnership with the Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade, an initiative of the Miami-Dade County Health Department.

?At Ocean Reef Club, I believe our wellness initiatives allow our employees to feel cared for and valued,? said Paul Astbury, President. ?We strive to give our employees the tools they need to make healthful decisions. Inventory List for iPhone review: Manage your stuff simply and easily

Some of us have a tendency to accumulate a lot more possessions than others. Whether you own a business, have multiple properties, or just have lots of things to keep track of, Inventory List can help. Unlike profesional inventory apps, Inventory List lets you add things and track them in your own way through the use of storage banks and locations.

There are lots of subscription inventory options out there but not all of us need that many features. Inventory List makes a pretty happy medium without being too over the top. The first thing you'll be asked to do is start adding locations and storage banks. Inventory List works as a nested hierarchy in order to keep track of your items with the top most level being a physical geographical location. For many of us this will be home, office, summer home, beach house, or any other location you need to inventory.

After you've created actual places, you can move on to creating locations within that space. For homes, this may be kitchen, bedroom, bathroom while at work it could be storage room, waiting room, or any other space you have a need to inventory items for. You'll also be given one more location spot that is nested so you can drill down to items such as cabinets, storage bins, or something else. I personally found this space better suited for categories instead of locations where I like to break things up into electronics, furniture, or any other category of item I'd like to inventory.

To add an item to Inventory List, you'll have to be drilled down all the way inside a physical location, space, and secondary space. This is one feature I wasn't too crazy about. Some people won't have a need for the secondary space and since categories are already supported when creating items, it seems redundant. A nice option would be for the user to be able to choose whether or not they even need that second location classification within settings and have the ability to disable it.

Once you're drilled down into a list, you can start adding individual items or quantities of a specific item. You can include a name, price, SKU (only if you want), a photo, and additional notes. This item will then be shown inside that list. You can also toggle between locations and individual inventory items on the home menu of Inventory List.

When it comes to syncing your items, Inventory List supports Dropbox sync and CSV export which should help keep active backups of all your items in case you ever needed to restore them or share them with others.

The good

  • Easy to see icons with quite a few choices which can help visually identify lists and items faster
  • Much simpler and easier to manage than advanced inventory programs
  • The drill down of categories helps to keep organization on point

The bad

  • Secondary location classification isn't always needed and should have a way to be turned off
  • Dropbox sync was finicky and kept yelling about development mode until it finally went through on the 5th or 6th try

The bottom line

Inventory List is really made for people that have a large amount of items to track such as contractors or property managers. If you're in one of these professions, Inventory List is a must have. It's also great for self employed individuals or those who many have storage units they'd like to keep a better handle on.

iPhone owners who aren't self employed or work with a moving inventory won't find much need for it, but those that haven't yet found a solution they're happy with should definitely give Inventory List a hard look.

NBC hopes Hayes, Fox can bolster Thursdays

NEW YORK (AP) ? NBC will try to awaken the ghosts of past dominance on Thursday night by making it a "family night" of television bolstered by the additions of Sean Hayes and Michael J. Fox.

NBC on Sunday became the first of the major broadcasters to announce its plans for next season, and its executives said they had ordered a staggering 17 new series. Only six of them are on fall's schedule, however, with another six to join in midseason when NBC hopes to get a burst of attention from its telecast of the Winter Olympics.

The struggling network is also taking a risk by moving two of its young and promising dramas to new nights: "Revolution" will switch from Monday to Wednesday, and "Chicago Fire" from Wednesday to Tuesday.

After an encouraging start to the current season last fall behind Sunday Night Football and "The Voice," the bottom fell out in midwinter when those two shows went away. NBC had some historically bad ratings, even falling behind the Spanish-speaking Univision in the February sweeps. Its executives were not made available to speak about the plans on Sunday.

Thursday used to be "must-see TV" on NBC in the 1990s but its decline symbolized the network's troubles. NBC's new emphasis for Thursday will be on broader-based, family comedies instead of shows like "The Office" which was a hit with critics but not the audience.

NBC will seek a turnaround with "Sean Saves the World," starring Hayes as a divorced gay dad who juggles work with raising a teenage daughter. Fox's show mirrors his life ? he plays a character getting back to work after being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. The third new Thursday comedy is "Welcome to the Family," about a white high school graduate impregnated by her Latino boyfriend.

Amy Poehler's "Parks and Recreation" will be back to open NBC's Thursday schedule. The network announced that the quirky "Community" had been renewed, but it hasn't found a spot on the schedule yet.

The drama "Parenthood" will air Thursday at 10 p.m.

NBC has canceled several of its shows, including the newsmagazine "Rock Center," the Matthew Perry comedy "Go On" and the quickly forgotten comedies "The New Normal," ''Up All Night," ''Guys With Kids," ''1600 Penn" and "Whitney."

The network said no decision has been made on the future of the low-rated serial killer drama "Hannibal" or the durable Donald Trump game "Celebrity Apprentice."

New fall dramas include "The Blacklist," which stars James Spader as fugitive who volunteers to help the FBI catch a terrorist; and "Ironside," with Blair Underwood as a New York City detective who uses a wheelchair.

NBC said two new comedies will replace "The Biggest Loser" on Tuesdays in midseason. And when football goes away, the network will try two new dramas on Sunday nights: "Believe," a J.J. Abrams series about a girl coming to grips with superpowers, and "Crisis," about a bus full of children of Washington elite who are kidnapped.

Extraordinary 28-Hour Dubai Timelapse Makes The World Seem Magical

Back in 2011 when Gerald Donovan filmed Dubai for 28 hours he made an incredible timelapse of it. But he couldn't leave well enough alone. After the limitless potential of the footage nagged at him for a few years he came back to it and made another beautiful version.

This time it spans all 28 hours instead of 24 and runs at 30fps with improved white balance. The new version calls more purposeful attention to light and shadow, movement of cars and people, and changes in the sky. It's a pretty amazing vantage point for viewing the city.
