HOLCOMB, Mo. - The Senath-Hornersville Lions varsity baseball team has made a habit of playing close games at the start of the 2012 fall season.

Senath-Hornersville entered Thursday's road contest against the Holcomb Hornets with a 1-1 record after winning its first game against Bernie 7-6 and suffering an 11-10 extra-inning loss at Campbell Tuesday.

The Hornets proved to be the third straight team to test the Lions nerves in late innings.

Extra innings were required to determine a winner after Holcomb rallied from a 2-0 deficit.

Senath-Hornersville leadoff hitter Kyle Moore didn't back away from an extra-inning pressure situation Thursday. Moore fouled off countless pitches by Holcomb reliever Michael Glover with a two-out full-count and the bases-loaded in the top of the eighth inning of a tie game.

"I fouled off four or five pitches," Moore said of his eighth-inning at-bat. "I think I saw a fastball everytime. I was just trying to do whatever it took to get a run in."

Moore finally found a way to calculate the go-ahead run in the lengthy at-bat when he didn't swing at 3-2 pitch that soared low and away. The RBI-walk put Senath-Hornersville on top 3-2.

Holcomb threatened to overtake the Lions in the bottom of the eight when it put runners on second and third with just one out. The scoring threat was halted in the Hornets' next at-bat when Holcomb's Lance Ruff lined out to second for the second out of the frame and the Lions tossed the ball to the second base for the final out before baserunners could return to their respective bases.

The timely double-play gave Senath-Hornersville a 3-2 win against Holcomb.

"Overall it is a good baseball game for us because we've got some younger players," Senath-Hornersville coach Jamie Johnson said. "Some kids really stepped forward today.

"I thought we played pretty clean baseball today and didn't have many errors," Johnson continued. "It's just a great baseball game and good for our program to win a game like this."

Senath-Hornersville needed superb defense to force extra innings. The Lions' defenders threw the go-ahead run out at home plate with one out in the sixth and again with two-outs in the bottom of the seventh.

"Zach Johnson did a good job of coming in hard on that base hit to left with runners in scoring position [in the seventh inning]," Johnson said. "He comes up and just makes a great throw to the plate to nail the runner. Brady Bibbs made a great play at third [in the sixth]. That's a freshman and a sophomore making those plays right there."

The Lions never trailed against Holcomb.

Senath-Hornersville jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third when cleanup hitter Nano San Miguel belted two-out solo homer over the right field fence. The Lions extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth when Moore connected for a two-out RBI-double.

"It was a breaking ball," Moore said of the double. "I looked to go to right field, got a good pitch and drove it the other way."

Holcomb did not collect a hit off of Lions' starting pitcher Austin Autry, but managed to erase the deficit without a hit in the bottom of the fifth.

The Hornets' Chance Davis drew a leadoff walk against Autry in the fifth. Ruff was then hit-by-pitch to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Johnson elected to lift Autry after he faced Ruff.

"I took Austin out with him throwing a no-hitter, but it was time," Johnson said. "That way he had a positive feeling about his outing today. I felt like he threw the ball excellent today. That's big for him as a left-handed freshman. Holcomb has a good hitting team and to hold them down for that long is pretty salty."

Ricardo Salas replaced Autry on the mound and pitched the remainder of the game for the Lions.

Holcomb loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth after the first hitter Salas faced reached base on an infield error.

Salas then got Colton Dunbar to pop out on the infield for the first out of the inning.

Pearson McClendon followed with a sacrifice fly to right to push Holcomb's first run across and cut the deficit to 2-1.

"I was just trying to hit it somewhere and put the ball in play," McClendon said "I thought their pitcher was throwing well and I was just trying to get the bat on the ball anywhere I could."

Cameron Clark followed with a walk to load the bases again. The Hornets then tied the game at two in Hunter Swafford's at-bat when every baserunner was allowed to advance one bag because a wild pitch stuck in the fence of the backstop.

Salas managed to preserve a tie game when he got Swafford to fly out later in the at-bat.

Senath-Hornersville loaded the bases in the top of the sixth after Brady Bibbs, Shane Crawford and Salas collected consecutive one-out singles off of Hornets' starting pitcher Dustin Houart. Holcomb escaped the jam unscaved when Glover struck out Senath-Hornersville's next two hitters to end the frame.

Holcomb picked up its first hit in the bottom of the sixth when Glover collected a leadoff single.

Swafford added a single in the seventh and Glover collected a single in the eighth to account for the Hornets' three hits.

Crawford, Salas and Roberto Rodriguez drew consecutive one-out walks in the bottom of the eighth before Moore followed with a game-winning RBI-walk.

"Close game and hats off to Senath," Holcomb baseball coach Matt Casper said. "They had good pitching from their starter and their reliever threw strikes.

"Our body language didn't look good from the start of the game," Casper added. "We have to be prepared and realize nothing is going to be easy for us. I just don't feel like we deserved to win today. We had a chance to win, but didn't deserve a win.

"We didn't hit the ball well at all," Casper continued. "We had to kind of result to small ball and make them make plays. They did a decent job and bared down when it was tight. We had some tough breaks in the late innings and just could not get a run across."

Holcomb, which beat South Pemiscot 5-4 on Tuesday, drops to 3-2 with the loss.

Weather permitting Senath-Hornersville will play at Delta C-7 Friday. Holcomb is scheduled to play at Bernie Friday.

Senath-Hornersville will host Cooter next Tuesday.

"Cooter has a great program and they always come ready to play," Johnson said. "It's nice to be going home. We haven't played a game at home yet and the kids are pretty excited and looking forward to it."

DNP Toshiba launches Canvio Personal Cloud, networkattached storage with iOS and Android apps

It's been a few years now that Toshiba's been making external hard drives, so it makes sense that the company would want to venture into larger disks as a next step. Indeed, the company just took the wraps off Canvio Personal Cloud, its first network-attached storage product. The drive itself will be offered in two flavors -- 2TB and 3TB -- but the hook, of course, is that you can use various apps to upload your files and then access them remotely. These applications include desktop software, as well as mobile apps for iOS and Android. In either case, the applications are designed to upload music, video, photos and documents, and all of this content is searchable by date and other filters. The drive will be available sometime next month, starting at $220 for the 2TB version and going up to $250 for 3TB. If you're curious, we've got hands-on photos of the UI past the break.

Parents Plan To Pay 57% Of Childrens' College Tuition, Fidelity Investments Survey Finds

Parents may have the best intentions for their kids, but the high cost of college is making it harder and harder to meet their goals.

On average, parents plan to pay for just 57% of tuition, a new survey from Fidelity Investments found.

And even there, they are coming up short. Families have enough savings to cover just 30% of what they plan on paying, the study found.

To make up the difference, they will look to additional funding options such as student loans, grants, scholarships and gifts from grandparents.

Although more than three-quarters of parents said they don?t want to burden their children with hefty student loans, in many cases it may be unavoidable.

Graduates leave school with an average of $25,250 in student loan debt, according to recent reports.

?It?s important for parents to sit down as early as possible with their children to review their college savings goals and make adjustments where it makes sense,? John Eidson, a spokesman for Fidelity Investments, told the Daily News.

For now, many families are not facing up to the big issues.

Less than one-third of parents with college-bound students have considered issues like cost, the burden of graduating with debt or the impact of school selection, the study found.

But of those that are stepping up, 61% are willing to make the changes to help better manage post-graduation debt.

Nearly 40% of families are opting for less-expensive colleges, 28% are planning to rely more heavily on financial aid and 16% are asking their children to change majors to secure better salaries after graduation.

Yosemite officials say 1,700 visitors risk disease

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) ? The rustic tent cabins of Yosemite National Park ? a favorite among families looking to rough it in one of the nation's most majestic settings ? have become the scene of a public health crisis after two visitors died from a rodent-borne disease following overnight stays.

On Tuesday, park officials sent letters and emails to 1,700 visitors who stayed in some of the dwellings in June, July and August, warning them that they may have been exposed to the disease that also caused two other people to fall ill.

Those four people contracted hantavirus pulmonary syndrome after spending time in one of the 91 "Signature Tent Cabins" at Curry Village around the same time in June. The illness is spread by contact with rodent feces, urine and saliva, or by inhaling exposed airborne particles.

After the first death, the park sanitized the cabins and alerted the public through the media that the cause might have been diseased mice in the park.

However, officials did not know for sure the death was linked to Yosemite or the campsite until the Centers for Disease Control determined over the weekend that a second visitor, a resident of Pennsylvania, also had died.

After every park tragedy, officials stress that Yosemite is a wilderness area and with it come some dangers.

"We're very concerned about visitors and employees," park spokesman Scott Gediman said. "But we feel we are taking proactive steps in both cleaning the affected areas and in public education. But it's absolutely impossible to eliminate all risk."

On Sunday night, health officials with the National Park Service sent out an alert asking public health authorities to be on the watch for more potential rodent-related cases of acute respiratory failure.

Yosemite receives 4 million tourists a year from around the world, and national park officials were trying to determine if the warning should be expanded to include foreign countries.

"We're discussing whether to do that and how to do that," said Dr. David Wong, chief of the epidemiology branch of the National Park Service Office of Public Health.

The disease can incubate for up to six weeks before flu-like symptoms develop. It's fatal in 30 percent of all cases, and there is no specific treatment. It is not spread human-to-human.

Wong said the Yosemite cases are unusual because hantavirus illnesses are most often isolated events.

"We are seeing more than one person who got it in a narrow space and time," he said. "It makes us wonder why, and those are questions we don't have the answers to."

All the victims stayed in the cabins between June 10 and June 20, and all four known cases were contracted by people who stayed within 100 feet of each other but not necessarily in the same cabins.

The National Park Service currently has assigned two epidemiologists to work in the park trapping rodents for testing. Additional studies are being done to determine if the Yosemite rodent population is higher than normal after a record snowpack in 2011 provided ample water for the grass seeds mice favor.

"Rodents and mice are native to the park, but we are looking at the populations and working with our wildlife biologists to determine if the population is too high," Gediman said. "There are rodents here, and we could never trap them all so that's not going to mitigate it."

As the Labor Day weekend approaches, some people have cancelled reservations at Curry Village after hearing about the outbreak, Gediman said.

The camp sits at the base of the 3,000-foot Glacier Point.

After boulders rained down in 2008, the park permanently closed some cabins. The newer, insulated Signature Cabins were built in 2009 to replace them. Investigators are trying to determine why those cabins were involved in the outbreak.

Park concessionaire Delaware North Co., which oversees the cabins, did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.

Rangers are handing out information brochures at the park entrance warning people to avoid mice in general and mouse droppings in particular.

People with reservations in the affected cabins are not being notified before arrival, but they are being warned during check-in to report any sightings of mouse feces.

"This is a serious public health issue and we want to be transparent, but at the same time we don't want people to alter their plans, because we are taking the necessary precautions," Gediman said.

Since the first illness was reported earlier this month, employees of Delaware North disinfected all 408 canvas-sided and wood-sided cabins in Curry Village. Workers are in the midst of shoring up the cabins in an attempt to keep mice from have easy access.

Epidemiologists say none of the victims had anything in common other than staying in Yosemite cabins.

A 37-year-old man from the San Francisco Bay area was the first person to die. Further details have not been released because of medical privacy laws.

Of the 587 documented U.S. cases since the virus was identified in 1993, about one-third proved fatal.

Deer mice were determined to be the main carriers of the virus, though other rodents can be infected, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Most of the cases occur in the West, though researchers are not sure why.

This year's deaths mark the first such fatalities of park visitors, although two others were stricken in a more remote area of the park in 2000 and 2010.

There have been at least two other fatal cases in national parks in the past few years, including a deputy superintendent at Glacier National Park who died in 2004, and a tourist at the Grand Canyon who was stricken in 2009.

Wong said health officials never were able to determine whether the victims contracted hantavirus inside the park grounds.

Home Projects ? Different Types of Home Improvement Projects

Home improvement projects are of different types and styles. Generally, home improvement refers to changing and altering the layout of a home?s exterior and interior parts.

These types of projects are typically done to add beauty in the home?s interiors, repair damages, do comfort upgrades, improve home safety and security, and to add space and rooms.

Interior design is perfect to beautify the interior spaces of your home. Painting and wallpapering ceilings, installing flooring, upgrading and repairing doors and windows, installing new cabinetry, and upgrading appliances are some of the home improvement projects you can do to enhance the look of your home?s interior. For installing flooring, you can either use wood panels, tiling materials, carpets and linoleum. New cabinets can be for your kitchen and bathrooms. You can also do upgrades on your kitchen sink, bathtub, bathroom and kitchen fixtures.

Home improvement projects for the purpose of repair include electrical fix-ups and plumbing, roof replacement, and structural repairs due to water damages or natural disasters.

Comfort upgrades include installing new or improved heating, ventilation and air conditioning, as well as upgrading bathrooms, music rooms and bedrooms.

To improve home safety and add better security, you can have fire system upgrades. Choose between sprinkler system and fire alarms. Other security improvement includes installing or upgrading burglar alarms, security doors and windows. Protection from natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes are available too.

For home additions, you can either add rooms and additional floors, or you can simply convert unused spaces into additional rooms.

These home improvement projects can be accomplished in two approaches.

If you have a bigger budget, you can hire general contractors to draw up renovation plans and get the job done. Then, there is the do-it-yourself approach. Step-by-step guides on the different renovation projects are widely available online, so the job can be done by yourself easily.

My brain made me do it: Neuroscience as defense

He was once a respected pediatrician, loved by patients and their parents for over 30 years. Now Domenico Mattiello faces trial for pedophilia, accused of making sexual advances towards little girls in his care.

Scientific experts will argue in court that his damaged brain made him do it, and his lawyers will ask for leniency.

It's the latest example of how neuroscience - the science of the brain and how it works - is taking the stand and beginning to challenge society's notions of crime and punishment.

The issue has been thrown into the spotlight by new technologies, like structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) scans and DNA analysis, that can help pinpoint the biological basis of mental disorders.

A series of recent studies has established that psychopathic rapists and murderers have distinct brain structures that show up when their heads are scanned using MRI.

And in the United States, two companies, one called No Lie MRI and another called Cephos Corp, are advertising lie-detection services using fMRI to lawyers and prosecutors.

While structural MRI scans show the structure of a brain and can highlight differences between one brain and another, PET and fMRI scans can also show the brain in action, lighting up at particular points when the brain engages in certain tasks.

Right place to use the technology?
But the dazzling new technologies and detailed genetic data leave unanswered the issue of whether criminal courts are the right place to use this new information.

"The worry is that the law, or at least some judges, might be so overawed by the technology that they start essentially delegating the decision about guilt to a particular form of test," says Colin Blakemore, a professor of neuroscience at Oxford University.

The lawyers for American serial killer Brian Dugan, who was facing execution in Illinois after pleading guilty to raping and killing a 10-year-old girl, used scans of his brain activity to argue he had mental malfunctions and should be spared the death penalty. In the event, Illinois abolished capital punishment while he was on death row.

In a court in the Indian city of Mumbai, a woman was convicted of murder based only on circumstantial evidence and a so-called brain electrical oscillations signature profiling (BEOS) test, the results of which prosecutors said suggested she was guilty.

The days when mental capacity for crime is argued over by psychiatrists unaided by sophisticated machinery - such as Friday's verdict that Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik was sane when he killed 77 people - look numbered.

"All sorts of types of neuroscience evidence are being used for all sorts of types of claims," says Teneille Brown, a professor of law at the University of Utah. "The question is, is this technology really ready for prime time, or is it being abused?"

In Mattiello's case, the neuroscientific evidence will come in the form of a full psychiatric and biological analysis including an MRI brain scan that shows a roughly 4 centimeter tumor growing at the base of his brain.

This created pressure inside his skull and "altered his behavior", says Pietro Pietrini, a molecular geneticist and psychiatrist at Italy's University of Pisa who is compiling an expert report on the 65-year-old.

"His previous behavior was completely normal," Pietrini told Reuters. "He was a pediatrician for 30 something years and he saw tens of thousands of children and never had any problem. The question is why, at some point, did someone who has always behaved properly suddenly change so drastically?"

The doctor was arrested in Vicenza, northern Italy, more than a year ago and is undergoing cancer treatment after having the tumor removed. Pietrini is due to see him again next month to continue his assessment and see the effects of the treatment.

The case, which has yet go to court, is strikingly similar to another of "acquired pedophilia" dating back to 2002, in which a 40-year-old married American schoolteacher suddenly became obsessed with sex and began secretly to collect child pornography.

He was eventually removed from the family home for making sexual advances towards his step-daughter and convicted of pedophilia. But later medical examinations found he had an egg-sized tumor in a part of the brain involved in decision-making.

When the tumor was removed, the man recovered from his pedophilic tendencies and was able to return to his family.

Experts are generally agreed that conditions like psychopathy and pedophilia can't be "cured", but in this groundbreaking case it appeared that removing the tumor, and hence the pressure in the brain, may have re-established his ability to control impulses.

As in that case, Pietrini said he and colleague Giuseppe Sartori of Padua University believed Mattiello's tumor "may well have played a role in altering his behavior".

"This is what we will be arguing," Pietrini said. "But of course it will be for the judge to determine to what extent he believes this medical condition played a role."

Oxford's Blakemore, one of the world's leading thinkers in this field, says such cases are "startling".

"It makes one wonder about the notion of responsibility," he said in an interview.

And when it comes to prison, should pedophiles, psychopaths and other violent criminals be punished less severely if their behavior can be blamed on biology? Is "my brain made me do it" a defense that warrants recognition with lighter sentences, or even no jail time at all?

"(It) raises the whole issue of what you think sentencing is for," says Blakemore. "Is it about punishment? Is it about retribution? Is it about remediation and rehabilitation? Is it about protecting society? Well, to some extent it's about all of those things."

Recent evidence - from both real and hypothetical cases - suggests judges are sympathetic to neurobiological evidence as mitigation.

A study published in the journal Science this month showed that criminal psychopaths in the United States whose lawyers provide biological evidence for their brain condition are more likely to be sentenced to shorter jail terms than those who are simply said to be psychopaths.

For the study, researchers at the University of Utah tweaked the real-life case of Stephen Mobley, a 39-year-old American who was sentenced to death in 1994 after robbing a Domino's pizza place in Georgia and shooting dead the restaurant's manager.

At his trial, Mobley's lawyer presented evidence in mitigation showing the accused had a variant of a gene called MAO-A that has been dubbed the "warrior" gene after scientists found it was linked to violent behavior.

In the Science study, judges were given a hypothetical case loosely based on Mobley's, where the crime was a savage beating with a gun, rather than a fatal shooting.

All the judges were told the defendant was a psychopath, but only half were given expert testimony on the genetic and neurobiological causes of his psychopathy. Those who got the neuroscientific evidence were more likely to give a shorter sentence - generally about a year less, the study found.

Pietrini worked on a similar real-life case in Italy in 2009 - thought to be one of the first criminal cases in Europe to use this type of neuroscientific evidence.

It involved Abdelmalek Bayout, an Algerian living in Italy, who was tried and convicted for fatally stabbing a man who teased him in the street.

After conducting a series of tests on the Algerian, Pietrini and colleagues said they had found abnormalities in imaging scans of his brain, and in five genes that have been linked to violent behavior ? including MAO-A.

A 2002 study led by researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London linked low levels of MAO-A with aggressiveness and criminal behavior in boys who were raised in abusive environments.

Bayout's lawyers got his sentence reduced by arguing that this and other bad genes had affected his brain and were partly to blame for the attack.

Experts say it's almost inevitable that neuroscience and law will become yet more intertwined. After all, while neuroscience seeks to find out how the brain functions and affects behavior, the law's main concern is with regulating behavior.

Yet many are uneasy about the use in courts of law - and in matters of life and death - of basic science that is only just creeping out of the lab.

'Where do we draw the line?'
Observers such as Hank Greely, a professor of law at Stanford University, point out that no scientific peer-reviewed studies have been published demonstrating that BEOS - the brain test used in the Mumbai case - actually works.

Others stress that while genes like MAO-A have been associated with violence, there are also plenty of people with similar genotypes who don't go out and kill, rape or abuse.

"Neuroscience is being used by serious scientists in real labs, but the people trying to apply it in courts are not those same people," says Utah's Brown. "So they're taking something that looks very objective, that looks like gold standard science, but then morphing it into a forensic use it wasn't developed for.

"This isn't snake-oil science. It's real science. But it's being misapplied."

Seena Fazel, a clinical senior lecturer in forensic psychiatry at Oxford University, says he's uncomfortable with the long-term implications and wonders where it will end.

There are already known biological bases for many brain disorders criminals suffer from, including drug addiction, alcoholism and antisocial personality disorder, which is thought to affect up to half of all those in prison.

"If psychopathy reduces your sentence because it has a biological basis, why shouldn't these other more common conditions also result in reduced sentences? The problem here is where do we draw the line?"

Obama courts college students returning to campus

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As college students return to campus, President Barack Obama's campaign will be there waiting for them.

Obama aides sees college campuses as fertile ground for registering and recruiting some of the more than 15 million young people who have become eligible to vote since the 2008 election. As Republicans hold their party convention in Florida this week, the president will make a personal appeal to college voters in three university towns: Ames, Iowa; Fort Collins, Colo.; and Charlottesville, Va.

Before departing on his two-day trip, Obama warned residents in the path of Tropical Storm Isaac to heed local officials.

"Now is not the time to tempt fate, now is not the time to dismiss official warnings," Obama said. "You need to take this seriously."

Administration and campaign officials were monitoring the storm as it barreled toward the Gulf Coast, but the president still planned to proceed with his travels.

Obama's victory four years ago was propelled in part by his overwhelming support among college-aged voters, and polls show him leading Republican rival Mitt Romney with that group in this year's race.

But the president faces an undeniable challenge as he seeks to convince young people that he is the right steward for the economy as they eye a shaky post-graduation job market.

Seeking to overcome that economic uncertainty, Obama's campus staffers and volunteers are touting the president's positions on social issues, like gay rights, that garner significant support among young people. Obama has stressed his effort to freeze the interest rates on new federal student loans, a pitch he personalizes by reminding voters that he and the first lady were once buried under a "mountain" of student loan debt after law school.

They also see a fresh opportunity to court students ? and their parents ? following Romney's pick of Paul Ryan as his running mate. Democrats say Ryan's budget would cut funding for Pell Grants, the federal need-based program for students, and Obama's campaign is running television advertisements in battleground states trying to link Romney to that plan.

Campaigning last week at Capital University in Ohio, Obama told students that Romney's economic plan "makes one thing clear: He does not think investing in your future is worth it. He doesn't think that's a good investment. I do."

Obama was scheduled to speak Tuesday at Iowa State University and Colorado State University. The University of Virginia rejected his campaign's request to hold an event on campus Wednesday, saying it would cause the cancellation or disruption of classes on the second day of the semester. The event was instead being held at an off-campus pavilion in Charlottesville.

Romney's campaign sees an opportunity to cut into the president's support among young people by pushing a three-pronged economic argument focusing on the nation's high unemployment rate, the soaring cost of college and the national debt.

"These kids haven't even entered the workforce and they already owe the government a bill for the debt Obama has rung up," said Joshua Baca, the Romney campaign's national coalitions director.

Obama campaign officials say the start of the new school year is a particularly crucial time to ramp up college registration and make sure those new voters get to the polls. In many of the battleground states, about 50 percent of the college students register to vote on campus after Labor Day, according to the campaign. And even those who are already registered may need to change their address or other personal details after moving to new dorms.

At the University of Dayton, Daniel Rajaiah encourages his fellow Democrats to carry voter registration forms to class, to parties and around campus in case they find someone who hasn't yet registered. Members of the College Democrats set up tables in the middle of campus a few days a week to catch students walking to class or to the cafeteria.

"Our game plan this fall is to hit voter registration very hard," said Rajaiah, who is president of the College Democrats of Ohio.

Obama's campaign said it registered 10,000 voters on college campuses in Ohio last week and signed up 300 new volunteers at colleges in Iowa.

Four years ago, Obama won two-thirds of the vote among 18- to 29-year-olds, compared with just 32 percent for his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain, according to exit polls.

An Associated Press-GfK poll released last week showed Obama again holding a broad advantage among younger voters, with 54 percent of registered voters under 35 saying they would vote for Obama and 38 percent backing Romney.

Reved Up all set for the Adopt A Retired Greyhound On 01142 - Bettor

Reved Up all set for the Adopt A Retired Greyhound On 01142 8883000

The most tuned up hound for the Grade A5 Adopt A Retired Greyhound On 01142 8883000 is the two-year-old black dog, Reved Up. His form is suspected to intimidate the rest of the line-up that has been attracted to the 500 metres flat race on Tuesday, 28th August at Sheffield. Taking their chance with bagging the prize money are Zig Zag Crossing, Shellys Shadow, Black Tanner, White Socks and Smoking Tony.

Since the last four races, the ranking of Broadacres Turbo?s son has fluctuated but even that has remained under a certain benchmark, a winning, two second positions and a third place.

The P. Sanderson trained finished a decent second in the Grade A5 www.sheffieldretiredgreyhounds.co.uk on 2nd August, 2012 at Sheffield over 500 metres.

The favourite entry of the race, Fairytales, won the race in 30.38 seconds and set Reved Up as the runner-up while leading by ? of a length. Getting crowded after leashing out from the first gate seems to be the only reason that would have kept the two-year-old from being the first one through the wire.

The black son out of, Lady Sharan, then tried his luck in a 500 metres race at Sheffield on 10th August, 2012. He ended third as the Grade A5 Betfred Bookmakers Race was won by, Mucky Rising, in 30.53 seconds.

Reved Up got through after racing for 30.57 seconds.

The black hound born on 24th May, 2010 then won the Grade A5 500 metres flat on 17th August, 2012 at Sheffield. Even though he did not get a chance to stay prominent throughout the race, he led just close to the line and timed the distance in 30.27 seconds.

Winning by the margin of just a short head?s difference had Shellys Shadow taking 30.27 seconds to settle the racing affair.

The two-year-old failed in sustaining the form and lost the Grade A5 500 metres flat race on 21st August, 2012 at Sheffield to a second position. He missed the race by ? of a length and took 30.22 seconds to cross the wire while the winner, Dishy Deb, had the race under her belt in 30.16 seconds.

The dark hound should make the most out of the chance that he has tonight.

Male snails babysit for other dads: Family secrets of marine whelk Solenosteira macrospira

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Pity the male of the marine whelk, Solenosteira macrospira. He does all the work of raising the young, from egg-laying to hatching -- even though few of the baby snails are his own.

The surprising new finding by researchers at the University of California, Davis, puts S. macrospira in a small club of reproductive outliers characterized by male-only child care. Throw in extensive promiscuity and sibling cannibalism, and the species has one of the most extreme life histories in the animal kingdom.

The family secrets of the snail, which lives in tidal mudflats off Baja California, are reported online in a study in the journal Ecology Letters.

In the study, UC Davis researchers report that, on average, only one in four of the hundreds of eggs that a male S. macrospira carries around on his back belong to him. Some carry the offspring of as many as 25 other males.

Such extreme cases provide the raw material on which natural selection can work and shed light on more "mainstream" species, said study author Rick Grosberg, a professor of evolution and ecology at UC Davis.

"It opens our eyes to viewing other kinds of behavior not as weird or harmful but as normal," he said.

The snails were first described in an amateur shell-collectors newsletter, The Festivus, in 1973. Grosberg started studying the animals in 1994, when he brought some back from a collecting trip and realized that only male snails had egg capsules on their shells.

When the snails mate, the female glues capsules containing hundreds of eggs each to the male's shell.

The male's shell likely acts as a substitute rock, since the snails' habitat offers few surfaces on which to glue eggs, said co-author Stephanie Kamel, a postdoctoral researcher in Grosberg's lab.

Moving in and out with the tide on dad's (or stepdad's) back also protects the egg capsules from the extremes of heat and drying they might face if left on a stationary rock.

A male's shell may become covered in dozens of capsules, each containing up to 250 eggs. As the eggs hatch, a process that takes about a month, some of the baby snails devour the rest of their littermates. Typically only a handful of hatchlings survives the fratricide to emerge from a capsule and crawl away.

Kamel carried out DNA analysis of brood capsules to determine the eggs' parentage. On average, she found that the male snails had sired just 24 percent of the offspring on their backs. Many had sired far less.

"The promiscuity in the female snails is extraordinary," Kamel said, noting that some females mate with as many as a dozen different males.

Why do they do it? Typically in the animal kingdom, females invest more resources in an egg than a male does in a sperm, so mothers have a stronger interest in providing parental care. Males may mate with multiple partners to increase their chances of siring offspring, but typically make less investment in caring for those young. When dads do get involved, it's nearly always because they are assured that all or most of the offspring are their own. Male sea horses, for example, carry developing young in a pouch -- but all are their own genetic offspring.

One explanation could be that caring for the kids just doesn't cost the male snails much. But by tethering individual snails to a post sunk in the sand, Grosberg was able to follow them over time and show that the capsules do impose a significant burden, reflected in weight loss.

It may be that carrying the egg capsules simply represents the best of limited options for the males, Grosberg said, since it's impossible for them to mate without the female attaching an egg capsule to their backs.

Or carrying egg capsules may be a way for a male to show a female that he's good parent material.

"If he wants to get any action, he has to pay the price," Grosberg said.

Grosberg is fascinated by the conflicts that occur between parents, between siblings, and between parents and offspring as they each try to get resources and maximize their success in breeding. You can see these conflicts and rivalries all the way from simple animals to humans, he notes.

"Everything that intrigues me about family life happens in these snails," he said.

At the same time, no animal has gone as far as humans in evolving increasing cooperation between relatives, tribes and larger and larger (and less closely related) groups over time.

"We're good at seeing other forms of reward," Grosberg said.

The work was funded by the National Science Foundation.

Gary the Gourami fish loves a kiss ? This Is Guernsey

Staff at a Sea Life centre are giving new meaning to the phrase ?trout pout? as they offer visitors a kiss from a fish.

The amorous fish, named Gary, has become popular with visitors to the Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary in Norfolk because of his constantly pouting lips.

Women working at the centre have developed the ritual of bending down to return a kiss through the glass each time they pass his tank.

Gary, a giant Gourami from Indonesia measuring nearly 28 inches long, never fails to return the gesture.

General manager Nigel Croasdale said: ?They don?t seem able to go past Gary?s tank without stopping for a quick smooch, and Gary seems to love it.?

Gary is one of several waifs and strays currently on display at the centre.

He was brought to the sanctuary by a member of the public who had kept him as a pet but became overwhelmed by his appetite ? he would guzzle a leftover Sunday dinner every weekend.

The freshwater species is a popular food fish in India but many people keep them as pets. Giant Gourami are one of the most common species requiring rehousing from home aquariums.

?They are often found in pet shops measuring just a few inches long, and people buy them without realising how big they grow, and how quickly,? said displays supervisor Kieran Copeland.

The sanctuary is supporting The Big Fish Campaign, launched by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums, in an attempt to deter shops from selling the so-called ?tank busters?.

Eaton to Develop Predictive Battery Management Technology for ...

SOUTHFIELD, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation announced today it is strengthening its commitment to hybrid vehicle technology by developing a cost-effective power control system to reduce the size of the system battery without a loss of battery life or vehicle performance. The fuel-efficient application is intended to optimize the operation of hybrid electric vehicles, from passenger cars to commercial vehicles.
?Eaton is continuing to invest in developing the infrastructure that supports the future of the transportation industry, and this project is an example of how we are working to find safe, efficient and sustainable ways to improve hybrid vehicle performance.?
The $2.8 million project is funded jointly between Eaton and a grant from the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency ? Energy (ARPA-E). The goal is to reduce the size of the battery by 50 percent and improve the total performance of the system and its charge rate while maintaining fuel economy and overall vehicle performance.

?This project is a continuation of Eaton's keen focus on hybrid technology development and our confidence in the value of hybrids for the future,? said Tom Stover, chief technology officer for Eaton's Vehicle Group. ?Eaton is continuing to invest in developing the infrastructure that supports the future of the transportation industry, and this project is an example of how we are working to find safe, efficient and sustainable ways to improve hybrid vehicle performance.?

The development project will be led by Eaton's Innovation Center team in Southfield, Mich., who will work with a team from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Eaton's engineers and scientists will leverage the company's expertise in intelligent power management systems and hybrid technology with the NREL's expertise in battery modeling and prognostics.

In addition to hybrid vehicle applications, Eaton sees opportunities to extend this technology into other areas where hybrid power management requires extended battery life, including community infrastructure, data centers, manufacturing and industrial.

?Only the best projects were chosen for this highly selective grant,? said Chris Roche, Eaton's vice president, Innovation Center, Corporate Technology. ?This type of grant is designed to fund highly transformative technologies, and Eaton and ARPA-E believe this technology is a true game changer in the area of hybrid power management.?

This is the second ARPA-E grant that Eaton has received within the past month. The other project was a $3.4 million grant to develop affordable home refueling stations for natural gas vehicles (http://www.eaton.com/Eaton/OurCompany/NewsEvents/NewsReleases/PCT_378453). Eaton also has received Department of Energy grants in the past 12 months for the development of technologies for compressed natural gas, research on waste heat recovery for commercial vehicles, and fuel cell expander research.
