Social Media Presentations, Templates, and Videos for Small ...

I speak often at social media and business conferences, and my PowerPoint presentations are a staple of my lectures. They range from overall strategy to specific social networks, and are loaded with case studies.

This resource page offers social media presentations, PowerPoints, and videos on everything from strategy, action plans, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and more. Bookmark this page so you can return to it often when you?re ready for a Lunch ?n Learn or quick refresher on your social media skills.

Developing Your Small Business Social Media Strategy

Creating a social media strategy is a bit of a Catch-22: you don?t really know what to plan for until you have some experience with social media. So I start all of my clients out with this social media strategy template: it walks you through the essential items you need to understand before you can make the key decisions for your strategy.

Here are both the PowerPoint presentation and a video of my lecture to Digital Atlanta in the Fall of 2011. I answer some great questions from business owners in a variety of industries:

Creating a Social Media Action Plan

Great! You?ve got a social media strategy.

Now what?

That?s what many entrepreneurs find themselves asking. How do I start and get it all done? Take a look at this PowerPoint presentation that lays out a simple step-by-step social media marketing plan:

What?s in a Facebook Timeline?

Once Facebook introduced the new Timeline, you heard ?experts? proclaiming it would change the way you would market on Facebook.

Seriously?

Here I offer my real-world approach to the Facebook Timeline: how important is it, how to use it, and examples of companies doing it well:

Small Business Marketing on Facebook 2012

Once Facebook introduced Timeline, it also introduced several other changes to its platform that impacted business (especially small business) far more. In this webinar I outline those changes, what they mean to how, how to make the most of them, and where to get more help:

Pinterest for Business

I held off on using Pinterest for a long time. After all, do we really need another social network? But, Pinterest is really different: my clients who don?t enjoy Facebook absolutely love Pinterest for its visual appeal and ease of use. So take a look and see if it?s right for your business:

LinkedIn Training Webinar

I did a joint webinar with Barbara Giamanco, a LinkedIn Expert and author of The New Handshake. She lays out how to use LinkedIn to drive sales. I invited Barbara to offer this webinar to my readers after I met her a social media conference and she was, by far, the most impressive speaker there. Don?t miss this one:

Enjoy these resources, with my compliments. Share them with friends and colleagues who are getting started with social media by clicking on the Share links at the top and bottom of the post.

How to Get Ready For a Small Business Presentation Or Speech

Posted on 7/30/2012 at 4:31:42 PM

There?s no such thing being an impromptu speech. Every presentation has to prepare yourself. The amount of preparation is dependent upon the newness of your topic. For instance, if someone were to ask you to discuss your school days, you?d need less than instant to prepare. I?m sure the ?current political scenario? will need more thinking and thus more time to prepare. Most often, when you are asked to talk, your hosts will say, ?Speak on anything. Whatever your favorite is.? At first, attempt to get your sponsor to give you a topic. Or even, find out what?s the event, what is the backdrop, that are the managers, what?s the objective of their group. These must give you enough for a generalized speech. When you?ve a subject:1. Try and do just as much analysis as you are able to on the niche. The libraries, the Net, experts on the niche, papers, publications, also your family are good places. Consider and make notes, even if they?re sketchy, after every such interaction.2. Remember, the audience is not anticipating a treatise on the niche. As you may and try, there?s going to be at least one person in the audience who knows a lot more than you know!3. Utilising the product you?ve gathered write from an essay, like you have been asked to write articles for a magazine. Remember every talk or every composition has a Conclusion, Human body, and Beginning. So, when you write your composition try to sequence your essay using most of the numerous tidbits of information you have gathered.4. Read the entire composition once. Utilize the gun and highlight the main points.5. Put down the main points on 5?x 3? cards. Number the cards sequence.6. Today, rest. You do not want to do everything else.7. On the afternoon of the speech, just bring the cards with you.8. As you stand up to glance and talk at the card, most of the issue you have written in your composition about a particular level can come back automatically to you.9. Do not try to study a speech by heart. Tricks will be enjoyed by your storage on you and you will find yourself embarrassing yourself.10. Even though you know a subject perfectly, the points written on the card will help you to sequence your self and deliver the most effective.

Software Patent Law in View of Recent Federal Circuit Rulings

Software Patent Law in View of Recent Federal Circuit Rulings

Within prior content articles I have left a comment how current Government Signal choices might adjust obvious regulation associated with software program innovations. The actual courtroom might have considerably cleared up the actual primary problems regarding regardless of whether the software program creation is actually patentable subject material. Additionally, it indicates numerous actions that may be drawn in obvious programs with regard to software program innovations which will boost the probability that they?ll end up being patentable subject material later on since the regulation devolves.

Previously choices advised which performing a good formula having a pc wasn?t associated with by itself sufficient to some device. Consequently, there is conjecture which requirements with regard to software program obvious capability might alter. This particular appeared to be leaving through a mature regular which software program performing on the common objective pc had been the device and thus might be patentable subject material.

The actual legal courts tend to be delicate in order to open public viewpoint and also to recognized improper use from the lawful program. There?s presently a lot critique which software program patents tend to be stifling development in the usa, which non-practicing organizations tend to be mistreating the actual obvious program in order to make money these people have not gained. The actual legal courts frequently change interpretations from the regulation within reaction to this type of open public outcry more than recognized violations.

For instance, the actual Government Signal experienced made the decision which something that created ?a helpful, cement as well as concrete result? might be patentable subject material. This particular resulted in the spectacular improve within the amount of patents submitted 4 company techniques, for example methods for promoting insurance coverage. The actual Government Signal later on altered the conventional due to the razor-sharp improve running a business technique patents, a lot of that have been experienced to become anti-competitive as well as apparent. Numerous speculated which current choices may be the begin of the comparable backlash in the direction of software program patents.

Nevertheless the court?s newest choice signifies which any kind of modifications within software program obvious regulation, in the event that any kind of, will likely be little. Your decision appears to are a symbol of the concept which software program innovations tend to be patentable subject material when they really are a request of the concept, even though the concept is definitely an subjective 1. The actual courtroom differentiates this type of request from the numerical formula, solely psychological actions, or even a good subjective idea. The important thing concern appears to be exactly how subjective or even useful the actual creation is actually. Subjective suggestions aren?t patentable, as the useful programs associated with subjective suggestions could be patentable subject material.

Your decision indicates numerous actions it?s possible to consume planning the software program obvious software with regard to creation so the creation is actually patentable subject material. The first is to incorporate explanation from the pc user interface. The actual pc user interface assists take away the creation in the subjective world as well as causes it to be the request. Software program obvious programs ought to explain and/or declare embodiments from the pc user interface. Additionally, programs ought to explain and/or declare relationships between your numerous words of flattery from the creation. This can additional ensure that the actual creation can be considered the request instead of being an subjective concept.

Dust to Dust: Darksiders II finds its spirit animal

Mon, Jul 30, 2012 | 12:40 BST

At four times the size of the first game, Darksiders II is big enough to make the most committed gamer break out in a bit of a sweat. Don?t be daunted; a little bird is here to help you find your way.

Darksiders II

The follow up to 2010?s Darksiders, Vigil?s debut title and a brand new IP.

Set in the same time frame as the original game; both War and Death are on a quest to prove War?s innocence in the triggering of the apocalypse which wiped out humanity.

Death is faster and more nimble than his solid brother and has access to a whole new array of tools.

One of the key new features is random loot, which provides a stronger RPG element to building your version of Death.

At a preview event last week I choked on the output of a fog machine, so THQ quietly let me sit down and play Darksiders II undisturbed for a couple of hours, perhaps as an apology for nearly letting me meet the actual grim reaper. Having seen all the cutscenes already and being a power gamer of the finest calibre (read: knows how to force-skip dialogue), I managed to get well past the opening section press had previously been allowed to come to grips with at E3, and complete not just the entire Crowfather world but the first two dungeons (of what looked like about six) of The Forge Lands.

It was only when I ran up against a boss I didn?t know how to beat ? probably the answer was in one of the dialogue bits I skipped ? that I remembered I had to go back to work at some stage. Otherwise, I think I might have been sitting there until THQ hit me over the head with a shovel and dragged me away. It?s not just that there didn?t seem to be any reason to stop; it?s that Darksiders II is huge. The map I reached at the preview event is just one of four worlds, each of which, according to Vigil, is the size of the original Darksiders. The very first activity the player performs as War?s brother Death is not to bash something up but to get on a horse and ride down a long winding path admiring the grandiose scenery and orchestral soundtrack. Not only does this immediately set the tone for what turns out to be a high-fantasy feeling very distinct from the first game?s atmosphere, it also gets you used to the idea of scale before you have to look at the overmap and have some kind of panic attack.

When I did get around to looking at the map of the first true world, The Forge Lands, it was after exploring the first town hub ? a dauntingly large area in and of itself ? and passing through a short navigational segment between me an the open plains. And I do mean open. Directly opposite me, sprawled between cliffs, was some sort of enormous tentacley eyeball thing which later research tells me was a form of Corruption, blocking my path to the Tree of Life, which connects the four realms. Apart from this obvious end goal, the pleasantly green landscape just spread out in front of me, dotted by paths snaking off in six directions.

Two minutes of pure gameplay.

Although the build I had didn?t do much to explain it, I discovered Death is accompanied by a raven named Dust. This handily green-highlighted companion is like an objective marker you can yell at; tapping the left analog stick down caused Death to bark a resentful order to the bird, which flew off in the general direction of the next goal. Out on the overmap, it was easy enough to find the path ? a gentle five-minute canter over the bodies of enemies through a good four different environments ? but in the dungeons, Dust became really valuable, highlighting the presence of levers, doors, ledges and other puzzle components.

I?m a little afraid of puzzles. I was raised on a diet of Tomb Raider, where when you walked into a cavernous room and the camera peeled off to the sound of some chanting monks you knew you were in for it and promptly called in someone better at basic logic. Vigil is far less fiendish than the old Core team in that it doesn?t require you to pull levers in the Fibbonaci sequence (or whatever), and most of the time it?s clear where you have to go and what you have to do ? even if actually achieving it is another matter. But when the dungeons are so large, and each one is a slice of a larger questline in a game of about 40 hours, you really don?t won?t to be bothered with going through the wrong door, hitting a dead end, and back-tracking. Send Dust to perch over the right corridor entrance, than hie yourself down it and solve the puzzle at the other end.

Loot, skill trees and magic.

With this simple little tool, Vigil has taken much of the pain out of what might otherwise prove to be too much game for the average pundit to handle. Completionists and trophy hounds are going to love the optional side-dungeons and ferreting out every single hidden treasure chest, but for those of us who just want to smack monsters, zip around dungeon walls like the world?s only attractive spider, and stare in horrified confusion at lever arrays for four hours before realising the door is behind them, that helpful little purple map marker and green glow make the world of difference. Darksiders II is shitting ginormous, and I?ll take any shortcut to the action I can find.

Darksiders II arrives on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on August 14 in the US and August 21 in Europe. A Wii U version is expected to follow.

10 reasons to drop Windows for Mountain Lion

14 hrs.

I guess you could say I started cheating on Windows back in October of 2010. That?s when Apple debuted the revamped?MacBook Air. For the first time, I could resume working almost as soon as I flipped the lid on a laptop, thanks to the way the?notebook?leveraged its flash memory. (Intel and?Ultrabook?makers wouldn?t offer a similar instant-on experience until a year later.)

The Air was a work of art, but it didn?t feel complete until?OS X Lion?arrived last year. With key time-saving features like Auto Save and Mission Control for faster multitasking, I started leaving behind my Windows notebook more and more.?Now that?Mountain Lion?is here, I may never look back. Here are 10 reasons why you might want to do the same.

iCloud Keeps Devices, Files in Sync

Make a change on a Pages document in Mountain Lion and iCloud will automatically update it on your iPad. It doesn't get any easier than that if you happen to own Apple's slate. You don't even have to think about whether to bring your MacBook or iPad with you when you leave the house, because everything is already in sync.

iCloud also keeps your Numbers and Keynote files up to date, and neatly presents all of your recent documents when you open any of the above apps. I just wish Apple's iWork suite could automatically save docs as Office-friendly versions by default for sharing with Windows users; instead, you have to check off a box every time.

Reminders App Uses Your Location

What's the point of putting together a to-do list if you're not going to follow through? The Reminders app in Mountain Lion vastly increases the chances you're going to cross more stuff off by the end of the day.

For starters, you can pin any list to your desktop just by double-clicking it, so you'll be less likely to ignore those tasks. Second ? and this is a biggie for me ? you can add a location to specific reminders. For example, just this morning I set a reminder to pick up my TransitChek card for when I arrived at work, and my iPhone buzzed as I emerged from the subway. I have no excuses now.

AirPlay Mirroring Transforms TV?

Usually when I pull out my laptop out at home, the kids moan and groan that daddy is about to do work again. But Mountain Lion's AirPlay Mirroring feature instantly changed their minds. With a single click I started streaming photos I took at a nearby park to an Apple TV. Then I streamed a trailer for "Ice Age 4" from YouTube.

Even better, I could mirror a game of ?RC Mini Racers? from the Mac to my HDTV, and within seconds the kids wanted to take over. AirPlay Mirroring is so simple to set up compared to Intel's WiDi and any DLNA solution on the Windows side, I can easily see Apple TVs popping up in classrooms and conference rooms.

Speak to Type

Take this down, Microsoft. Mountain Lion converts your words into text anywhere you can type. This is a great way to compose memos, emails or even tweet when your hands are full. It couldn?t be easier to start dictating. Just double tap the Function key to bring up a little microphone, then tap it again to finish. While we wish dictation worked offline, it has proved accurate in our testing, including punctuation.

Send and Receive Texts from the Desktop

When I?m at work I find texts on my iPhone pretty distracting, so I welcome the new Messages application for Mountain Lion. It integrates iMessages and all of your favorite IM clients (AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo, Jabber, etc.) into a single app. This way I can communicate with my wife when she?s on her iPhone right from the desktop. And if she sends me a photo I can double-click it to make it bigger and then share it on Facebook.

Game Center: Take That, Xbox

There?s no question that Windows still trumps the Mac when it comes to the number of games available, but Mountain Lion brings a secret weapon. With Game Center your Mac can tap into a community that has grown to 130 million iOS gamers, enabling you to compare scores and achievements across both Mac and iOS games. Plus, a growing number of titles let you challenge your buddies on their iPhone and iPad, such as ?Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy.?

Faster, Smarter Browsing With Safari?

As someone who constantly has too many tabs open, the new Tab View is a godsend for me. Just pinch to zoom out, and you?ll see large thumbnails of all of your open tabs, making it easier to see what?s what and decide what to close.

Safari is smarter than Windows? Internet Explorer in other ways. The new unified address bar is another huge time-saver, which presents Top Sites, recommended Google Search results and bookmarks and your surfing history as you type.

Notifications All In One Place

While I like the way Windows 8 shows your notifications within its Live Tiles for apps, Mountain Lion?s Notification Center makes it easier to see all of your alerts at a glance. Notification Center is also highly customizable. You can choose how many alerts you want to display from each app and the order of how they appear. Plus, you can turn all of the notifications off with a click when you need to be heads down. Bonus: you can post right to Twitter and Facebook from this menu.

Mail VIPs: Never Miss an Email from Your Boss

This unsung feature of Mountain Lion makes it easy to set up an instant folder of messages for very important people, whether it?s your boss, spouse or anyone else whose emails you simply cannot miss.

All you have to do is star that person?s name from within a message and you?ll have a VIP folder. You can even tweak the settings so that you?ll only get Notifications when new messages from VIPs arrive.

It?s More Like Windows Than Windows 8

Recently, Current Analysis analyst Avi Greengart issued this tweet: ?OS X Mountain Lion is a more natural upgrade from Windows 7 than moving to Windows 8.? There?s actually some truth to this comment because Windows 8 represents a radical user interface change for the world?s most popular desktop OS. Mountain Lion may borrow plenty of elements from iOS, from Launchpad to apps like Notes, but it?s still very much a traditional operating system. In Windows 8, the desktop is its own app, which may prove jarring to a lot of users. Mountain Lion could very well be that more familiar alternative.

Magnetic field, mantle convection and tectonics

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? On a time scale of tens to hundreds of millions of years, the geomagnetic field may be influenced by currents in the mantle. The frequent polarity reversals of Earth's magnetic field can also be connected with processes in the mantle. These are the research results presented by a group of geoscientists in the new advance edition of Nature Geoscience on July 29th.

The results show how the rapid processes in the outer core, which flows at rates of up to about one millimeter per second, are coupled with the processes in the mantle, which occur more in the velocity range of centimeters per year.

The international group of scientists led by A. Biggin of the University of Liverpool included members of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, the IPGP Paris, the universities of Oslo and Utrecht, and other partners.

It is known that Earth's magnetic field is produced by convection currents of an electrically conducting iron-nickel alloyin the liquid core, about 3,000 kilometers below Earth's surface. The geomagnetic field is highly variable, there are changes in Earth's magnetic field on a multitude of spatial and temporal scales. Above the liquid outer core is the mantle, the rock in which behaves plastically deformable due to the intense heat and high pressure. At the boundary between Earth's core and mantle at 2900 km depth there is an intense heat exchange, which is on the one hand directed from Earth's core into the mantle. On the other hand, processes within Earth's mantle in turn also affect the heat flow. The interesting question is how the much slower flow in the solid mantle influences the heat flow and its spatial distribution at the core-mantle boundary, and how this will affect the Earth's magnetic field which is produced due to the much faster currents in Earth's core.

Key variable heat transfer

"The key variable is the heat flow. A cooler mantle accelerates the flow of heat from the hot core of Earth, and in this way alters the also heat-driven convection in Earth's core," said Bernhard Steinberger of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences. "Ocean floor sinking into the mantle due to tectonic processes can lead to cooling in the mantle. They cause at these sites an increased heat flow into the cooler parts, namely until they have been heated to the ambient temperature." That might take several hundred million years, however.

Conversely, the hot core of Earth leads to the ascent of heated rocks in form of large bubbles, so-called mantle plumes that separate from the core-mantle boundary and make their way up to the surface of Earth. This is how Hawaii came into existence. This increases the local heat flux out of Earth's core and in turn modifies the generator of the geomagnetic field.

Reversals of the magnetic field

In Earth's history, polarity reversals of the geomagnetic field are nothing extraordinary. The most recent took place only 780 000 years ago, geologically speaking a very short period of time. The research team was able to determine that in the period of 200 to 80 million years before present, reversals initially happened more often, namely up to ten times in hundred million years. "Surprisingly, these reversals stopped about 120 million years ago and were absent for nearly 40 million years," explains GFZ scientist Sachs. Scientists presume that the reason for this is a concurrent reorientation of the whole mantle and crust with a shift in the geographic and magnetic poles of about 30?. Known as "true polar wander," thisprocess is caused by a change in density distribution in the mantle. If it increases the heat flux in equatorial regions, it would presumably lead to more frequent field reversals, if it decreases it, the field reversal might not occur.

Looking to the future

According to current knowledge, therefore, an influence of plate tectonics and mantle convection on Earth's magnetic field seems quite possible. The article also shows, however, that further research is still needed for a better understanding of these relationships. In particular, more episodes of "true polar wander" should be derived from paleomagnetic data, and it should be determined whether these are usually associated with an altered behavior of the magnetic field (e.g. frequency of field reversal). Also, future models for the generation of the geomagnetic field should investigate the influence of the spatial and temporal variation of the heat flux at the core-mantle boundary in more detail.

Home Improvement: Contemporary Home Plans

The Contemporary style appeared in architect-designed homes of the fifties, sixties, and early seventies. Examples of Contemporary style homes from popular culture range from the "Monsanto House of the Future" at Disneyland of 1956 to the sitcom home of "The Brady Bunch," which ran on television from 1969 to 1973. Common characteristics include simple, clean lines with large windows devoid of decorative trim, flat or gabled roofs, asymmetrical shapes, and open floor plans. Contemporary exteriors are usually stucco, stone, brick or wood. The flat-roofed variations resemble International Style homes but lack the latter's stark white surfaces.

Some Contemporary style home designs showcase natural materials and emphasize easy indoor-outdoor connections. In its broadest definition, contemporary simply means "of today." The Contemporary house style overlaps with the Modern home style but is less strictly tied to roots in the Bauhaus and the International Style.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Katherine Jackson's attorney said late Thursday that he had met with his client face-to-face for the first time in several days and that she was doing fine despite familial squabbling that forced a judge to temporarily suspend her as guardian of her son Michael's three children.

"I had a long and productive meeting today with Mrs. Jackson," Perry Sanders Jr. wrote in a statement. "I am pleased to report that she is fine and she laughed at the widely publicized report that she had suffered a stroke."

The description of Jackson suffering a stroke was included in a letter signed by five of her children calling on executors of Michael Jackson's estate to step down. The letter was leaked last week and was an early sign of turmoil that was to come for the Jackson clan. Since late Saturday when a relative reported Katherine Jackson missing, speculation has swirled about her whereabouts, her health and why she hadn't called her grandchildren for nearly 10 days. Rival factions in the family released dueling statements on Twitter and family members tussled in the driveway of her home in an incident that remains under investigation.

Sanders said he would be releasing a formal statement Friday morning about his discussions with Katherine Jackson. He has previously said he will move to re-instate her as guardian over Jackson's children, Prince, Paris, and Blanket.

Although Thursday was a mostly quiet day in the ongoing Jackson family turmoil, it was not without drama.

"Although I am happy my grandma was returned, after speaking with her I realized how misguided and how badly she was lied to," Prince Jackson wrote in a posting on his Twitter account. "I'm really angry and hurt."

Hours later the post was deleted, but re-emerged by late afternoon, with the eldest son of Michael Jackson wondering if his account had been hacked. The post was the first time Prince Jackson, 15, had publicly commented on his grandmother's absence.

A judge on Wednesday granted Tito Jackson's son TJ temporary guardianship over the children, citing concerns that Katherine Jackson was being prevented from fulfilling her role as guardian. Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff said there were no indications the 82-year-old had done anything wrong, and he would likely re-instate her upon her return.

Katherine Jackson had been at a Tucson, Ariz. spa since July 15 with her daughter Rebbie and other relatives and had not spoken to her grandchildren during that time. TJ Jackson and numerous others said that was unusual and when she did call, he said she sounded "strange."

"I've never heard my grandmother talk like that," he said reluctantly. "In every way. The sound in her voice. The pauses."

Sanders, who had flown to Arizona to try to meet with his client on Tuesday, was not allowed to see her at the resort.

He said some of her speech sounded slurred and she used words that made him wonder if she was speaking in code.

Before leaving Arizona to return to her hilltop home in suburban Calabasas, Katherine Jackson told ABC News that the court ruling was "based on a bunch of lies."

If Katherine Jackson does not move for an emergency hearing to reinstate her guardianship position, another hearing in the case will be convened Aug. 22.

Drexel engineers' sensor technology aims to streamline tests for toxins and pathogens

PHILADELPHIA - A tiny vibrating cantilever sensor could soon help doctors and field clinicians quickly detect harmful toxins, bacteria and even indicators of certain types of cancer from small samples of blood or urine. Researchers from Drexel University are in the process of refining a sensor technology that they developed to measure samples at the cellular level into an accurate method for quickly detecting traces of DNA in liquid samples.

According to lead researcher Dr. Raj Mutharasan, a professor in Drexel's College of Engineering, the group's unique application of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) to current piezoelectric-excited cantilever sensor technology has created a way to conduct more sensitive and timely tests for DNA. This DNA test will allow for quick identification of harmful cells and bacteria.

"I equate this new technology to authorities trying to catch a criminal using latent fingerprints rather than a mug shot," Mutharasan said. "It is more precise, selective and sensitive. With the PZT sensor we can potentially detect DNA derived from a much smaller number of pathogens and in a much shorter period of time than current methods."

Cantilever Sensor Uses Electric Current for More Sensitive Measurements

Cantilever sensor technology, which has been around for a little over a decade, detects its minute targets using a method that is relatable to a springboard bouncing with the movements of a diver. The "board" or cantilever in this application vibrates at a higher frequency when the diver jumps off and his or her mass is removed. Conversely, the vibration frequency of a cantilever would decrease when weight is added to it. Measuring the difference in frequency of mass-free versus mass-loaded vibrations allow researchers to detect cells or, in this case, DNA, in samples.

Mutharasan and his group combined the PZT material to the cantilever in an innovative design, which allows researchers to initiate the "springboard" effect by applying an electric current. This is an upgrade over the classical cantilever method which requires an external stimulus a flick of the diving board to set the system into motion.

Because PZT sensors are completely controllable, Mutharasan's group has discovered high-order vibration modes in certain designs that are sensitive to very small mass changes, on the order of one-billionth of a microgram, in liquid samples.

"Such high sensitivity enables us to measure biological molecules at a million-fold more sensitive than what is currently feasible," Mutharasan said

A Second Advantage: Rapid Room-Temperature Replication of DNA

The PZT cantilever device is dually useful because it speeds up the process of replicating DNA in a sample. Replication is a necessary step in the testing process in order to improve the quality of the sample and positively identify the bacteria or cell of its origin, much like growing bacterial culture. Muthrasan's research group will conduct simultaneous amplification and detection of DNA that is expected to be carried out at room temperature and in a short time frame.

Typical replication can be time-consuming because the sample needs to be heated in order to begin the process. The advantage of the cantilever sensor is that double-stranded DNA can be unwound by vibrating the sensor at the proper frequency. This procedure essential step for replication can cut a typical detection process, which could take several hours, down to less than an hour.

The National Science Foundation recently awarded the team a grant to continue research into simultaneous DNA replication and detection using these piezoelectric vibrations. The key discovery that Mutharasan's team is building upon is its observation that DNA can be "melted" a term describing the process of unwinding a DNA strand for replication by application of mechanical energy to sensor surface via PZT.

With the PZT sensor's unique ability to test samples in liquids and at room temperature, Mutharasan can foresee applications in detecting food and water contamination, as well as use in the medical field. In early testing the PZT sensor has successfully detected DNA indicators for prostate cancer in urine samples, toxin-producing genes in pathogenic E. coli and an identifying gene of malaria-causing Plasmodium falciparum in patient blood samples. The technology is still likely to be three-to-five years from becoming commercially available for medical and environmental uses, according to Mutharasan.

Ousted China politician's wife charged with murder

Reuters, file

Gu Kailai is the wife of China's former Chongqing Municipality Communist Party Secretary, Bo Xilai.

By NBC News' Edmund Flanagan, Eric Baculinao, Joy Le and wire services

Updated at 12:25 p.m. ET: BEIJING -- The wife of ousted Chinese politician Bo Xilai and a family aide have been charged with the murder of a British businessman, the government said Thursday, pushing ahead a case at the center of a messy political scandal that exposed divisions in the country's leadership.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported that the prosecutor's indictment said Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, had a falling out with Briton Neil Heywood over money and worried that it would threaten her and their son's safety. Gu and the aide, Zhang Xiaojun, are alleged to have poisoned Heywood together, the report said. Heywood's death in November was attributed initially to a heart attack or excessive drinking.

"The facts of the two defendants' crime are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial. Therefore, the two defendants should be charged with intentional homicide," Xinhua said.

It did not give a date for the trial, but a family lawyer told Reuters it was likely to take place on August 7-8.

Thursday's brief report is the first official news that the case against Gu is proceeding since the announcement three months ago that she and Zhang were being investigated and that Bo was being suspended from the powerful Politburo for unspecified discipline violations. The Xinhua report did not mention Bo's case or a separate party investigation into Bo.

Prosecutors have interrogated Bo and Zhang and have "heard the opinions" of their defense lawyers, Xinhua said.

The scandal has exposed the bare-knuckled infighting that the secretive leadership prefers to hide and affirmed an already skeptical public's dim view about corrupt dealings in the party.

City divided by disgraced Communist leader's legacy

Disappeared from public view
Since Bo was dismissed in March, he and his wife Gu, formerly a powerful lawyer, have disappeared from public view and have not responded publicly to the accusations against them.

The charges were filed in the eastern city of Hefei, Xinhua said Thursday. It did not say when exactly the indictment was issued or when the crime occurred and why the case is being prosecuted in Hefei and not in Chongqing, the city Bo ran as Communist party secretary and where the couple lived.

But according to?Si Weijiang, a prominent lawyer in China who is followed by 170,000 people on his microblog,?Hefei, in eastern China's Anhui Province, was selected due to its political reliability.

Wang Shengjun, who is the chief justice of China's Supreme People?s Court, is from Anhui and the province has, according to Si, built a reputation of being politically reliable and harsh on defendants.

"The case being filed at Hefei, will set Chief Justice Wang's mind at ease," Si wrote Thursday.

Scandal sends China's netizens into a feeding frenzy

In another post, Si noted the intense political ramifications of this case.

"This is a political case. No accidents is success. So it [the court] must be a place that can be trusted," he wrote.

But Fang Hong, a Chongqing resident featured in a piece by NBC News in May,?hailed the prosecution move as a "vindication of my criticism" of Bo's rule.

"They tried to destroy the rule of law so as to make it convenient for them to murder people, and now they will get what they deserve," he told NBC News.

"This case is being handled according to the law," he said, adding that "some people with limited understanding wrongly think it is a political striuggle, but it is not. ...?What the law says is what they will get."

British businessman Neil Heywood, who died in November 2011, was a long-time friend of Bo Xilai and Gu Kailai.

Political ascent stopped
Thursday's announcement comes months before the ruling Communist Party unveils a new top leadership.

Before his ouster, Bo was one of China's most powerful and charismatic politicians. The son of a revolutionary veteran, Bo was seen as a leading candidate for a position in the Politburo Standing Committee, the highest ranks of power, when a younger group of leaders is installed later this year.

Son of sacked Chinese official fights back

On his rise, Bo led high-profile campaigns to bust organized crime and to promote communist culture. In doing so, however, his administration ran roughshod over civil liberties, angered some leaders and alienated others with his publicity seeking.

The removal of Bo has triggered rifts and uncertainty, disrupting the Communist Party's usually secretive and carefully choreographed process of settling on a new central leadership in the run up to its 18th congress.

Left-wing supporters of the charismatic Bo have defended him as the instigator of a much-needed new path for China, and many of them see him as the blameless victim of a plot.

The 18th Party Congress, scheduled to be held late this year, will appoint that leadership. President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao will then step down from their government posts at the National People's Congress in early 2013, when Vice President Xi Jinping is likely to succeed Hu as president.

Growing credibility gap
Analysts here agree that the legal steps announced Thursday are part of the authorities' effort to dispose of the case and remove a major distraction before the once-in-a-decade leadership succession later this year.

However, this week has been a week of disruptions that have kept government propaganda officials and censors busy.

Besides the ongoing saga of Bo, Beijing this past weekend dealt with the worst flooding in nearly six decades. Just as news of Gu?s charges came out, word also broke that the death count from the flooding, which previously had stood at 37, had been bumped up to at least 77. Many Beijing residents had been highly dubious of earlier government estimates of the death toll, highlighting the party's credibility gap.

The news also came on the eve of the 2012 Olympics in London, where China hopes again to top the tables in gold medals.

Still, the government was not taking any chances: the comments section on the official Weibo account of popular Chinese state newspaper, People's Daily, was turned off for the post regarding Gu's murder charges.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Obama, Romney swap sharp foreign policy criticism

SEATTLE (AP) ? In a rare face-off on foreign policy, President Barack Obama and Republican rival Mitt Romney are swapping sharp criticism but exposing few clear policy differences on key national security matters.

For Romney, who seeks to boost his foreign policy credentials as he begins a high-stakes trip abroad, a lack of specific proposals has exposed him to a flurry of criticism from Obama and his surrogates. Just over three months from Election Day, the president's team has dug in on its efforts to cast the Republican as a national security lightweight while trying to capitalize on Obama's strength on such issues.

Following Romney's speech Tuesday to the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention, Vice President Joe Biden said Romney "reflexively criticizes the president's policies without offering any alternatives."

"When he does venture a position," Biden said, "it's a safe bet that he previously took exactly the opposite position and will probably change his mind again and land in the wrong place ? far out of the mainstream."

Romney's campaign has swatted away that criticism, but it's also shown few signs that the presumptive GOP nominee will offer more specific areas of contrast with Obama when he meets with world leaders overseas. Instead, Romney has continued with broad jabs casting Obama as a timid leader.

"If you do not want America to be the strongest nation on earth, I am not your president," Romney told the veterans group. "You have that president today."

Romney said he would reset Obama's reset with the Kremlin, but he did not elaborate on how. On Afghanistan, he accused Obama of making politically motivated decisions on drawing down U.S. force levels. He said that, if elected, he will call for a review of the transition in Afghanistan ? but with the same goal as Obama of ending U.S. combat operations in 2014.

Romney also said he will restore the U.S.-Israel relationship and make the Jewish state his first foreign destination as president. He said he would increase military assistance to Israel, though the Obama team says the administration has already provided Israel with record levels of security assistance.

The foreign policy fight was expected to continue as Romney arrives in Europe on Wednesday to begin a six-day, three-country tour and Obama pushes on with fundraising events at home. The president was jetting from Seattle, where he raised money Tuesday night, to New Orleans for more fundraisers and a speech to the National Urban League.

In an election year dominated by the economy, it could be the last phase of the campaign focused on foreign policy.

That could be good news for Romney, who polls strongly on the economy but has been unable to cut into Obama's advantage on national security issues. The Obama administration's counterterrorism fight against al-Qaida and especially the killing of Osama bin Laden have undercut longtime Republican efforts to cast Democrats as soft on defense.

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll published Tuesday showed Romney leading Obama 43 percent to 36 percent on which candidate is seen as better equipped to improve the economy. But the same poll showed Obama is seen as a better commander in chief, 45 percent to 35 percent. Last week, a CBS News/New York Times poll found 47 percent of voters said Obama would do a better job handling foreign policy, while 40 percent chose Romney.

Romney's overseas trip comes during a notably heated phase of the campaign, although the candidates dialed back their negative attacks over the weekend following Friday's mass shooting in Colorado.

Romney's advisers have said the former Massachusetts governor plans to avoid obvious attacks on the president while overseas, following longstanding tradition that U.S. politicians don't criticize their country's leader while abroad.

"The contrasts will be kept here in the States," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul has said.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said an overseas trip Obama took as a candidate in 2008 proved it was possible to adhere to that tradition while still offering substance. Obama kept up his criticism of Republican rival John McCain during the campaign trip, but he avoided directly attacking President George W. Bush.

"We'll see if that standard continues to apply," Carney said of Romney's trip.

Romney will attend the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in London on Friday night. He also has meetings planned with British Prime Minister David Cameron and other top government officials.

From London, Romney plans to visit Israel and meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, then wrap up his trip in Poland.

Germ Airways, You're Cleared for Takeoff: The U.S Airports Most Likely to Spread Pandemics

When people travel by plane, even solo flyers are never really alone: hitching a ride are millions of germs that could potentially spread a number of serious and even lethal illnesses.

How airport travel factors into the spread of pandemics is the focus of a study released recently in the journal PLoS One. Using a new statistical model and network theory, MIT researchers ranked U.S. airports in terms of how they might play a role in the first 15 days of disease spread. New York?s Kennedy International Airport ranked number one, followed by Los Angeles International and Honolulu International.

Air traffic wasn?t the only component that factored into the ratings. Connectivity, traffic and geography were the three key elements that gave the airports their standings as contagion hot spots. Also factored into the equation were airport waiting times.

Honolulu, for example, pales in comparison traffic-wise to JFK, with only 30 percent as much air traffic as the New York hub. But because it?s smack in the middle of the Pacific Ocean it has proximity to Asia, Australia and the U.S. Other super-spreaders included San Francisco, Newark Liberty and Chicago O?Hare. Louisville International Airport in Kentucky ranked last.

In establishing individual travel patterns, researchers looked at cellphone data on how humans move, and how fluids flow through in subsurface rock. Rather than consider travel a random thing, they theorized that airplane passengers create patterns that can be reproduced.

?The findings could form the basis for an initial evaluation of vaccine allocation strategies in the event of an outbreak,? said co-author Ruben Juanes in a news release, ?and could inform national security agencies of the most vulnerable pathways for biological attacks in a densely connected world.?
