Ocean Reef Club, a private, member-owned community in Key Largo, Fla., has won a Florida Worksite Wellness Award. Ocean Reef was the winner in the mid-size employer category, for businesses with 500 to 1,000 employees.
The program honors Florida companies that demonstrate a commitment to employee wellness and whose programs produce positive health outcomes.
The award was presented by the Florida Heart Research Institute, in partnership with the Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade, an initiative of the Miami-Dade County Health Department.
?At Ocean Reef Club, I believe our wellness initiatives allow our employees to feel cared for and valued,? said Paul Astbury, President. ?We strive to give our employees the tools they need to make healthful decisions. Ultimately, we want to inspire our staff to engage in their own wellness and the wellness of their families.?
Among the wellness initiatives that earned praise from judges were:
*?????? An onsite caf? for employees that features daily healthful offerings, and meals that are considered healthy are at a reduced price. Nutrition classes, cooking classes and demos, one-on-one nutritional counseling and Weight Watchers are available throughout the year.
* ?????Fitness classes, including Zumba, spin, boot camp, yoga and pilates, are free for employees, along with use of paddleboards, kayaks and sailboats. The club?s golf and tennis pros offer reduced-price weekly lessons. Two gyms are available for employees, plus free bicycles to get around the property.
*?????? Regular lectures on heart disease, diabetes education, high blood pressure and other issues relevant to the staff are available. The club also has its own onsite medical center.
*?????? A bi-weekly wellness newsletter and a staff-dedicated intranet keep the club?s nearly 1,000 employees up-to-date on all wellness initiatives and incentives, as well as mandatory safety training and monthly AED/CPR class. In recognition of the diverse staff population, communications are available in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole.
?Some companies measure the success of their wellness program in terms of statistical benchmarks related to retention and productivity,? said Astbury. ?For us, our greatest success comes from knowing that we have a healthy, engaged workforce.?
