Stanford University ranks No. 1 on Forbes list of America's top colleges

California schools bested East Coast universities in Forbes' annual ranking of top US colleges on Wednesday, with Stanford University and Pomona College capturing the top two spots.

Stanford, a research and teaching university in Northern California's Silicon Valley, ranked No. 1, jumping from third place last year after scoring high marks for retention rates and high graduate starting salaries. It has 19,945 students and annual costs are $58,846.

Much smaller Pomona College, with 1,586 students and an annual bill of $57,041, was in second place. The college, about 30 miles (50 km) east of Los Angeles, offers only undergraduate degrees.

"For the first time in the six years Forbes has produced this list, the top two schools are on the Pacific Coast," Forbes said in an article on Wednesday accompanying the list at www.forbes.com/top-colleges.

Princeton University in New Jersey, which was No. 1 last year, slipped to third place, followed by Yale University in Connecticut in fourth place and Columbia University in New York City at No. 5.

Costs at the top five schools ranged from $54,789 at Princeton to $61,640 at Columbia.

The Forbes ranking of 650 US colleges and universities, calculated by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, is based on student satisfaction, post-graduate success, student debt, graduation rate and national competitive awards.

Massachusetts had the most schools in the top 10 with Harvard University at No. 8, slipping from No. 6 last year; Williams College in ninth place and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at No. 10.

The University of California, Berkeley, which came in 22nd on the list, was ranked as the best state school in the country. Twenty-three public schools ranked in the top 100.

"Flagship state schools offer an excellent education for much lower tuition bills than their average private counterparts. As more students are seeking to hold down debt, public colleges and universities can and will be more selective," Forbes said.

Among top-tier Ivy League schools, New York's Cornell University rose to 19th on this year's list from No. 51 in 2012. The University of Pennsylvania ranked No. 11, Brown University in Rhode Island came in at No. 12 and Dartmouth in New Hampshire was No. 16.

Morehouse College in Atlanta made the biggest leap in the ranking, jumping 235 places to No. 285.

Kathryn McEwen added a discussion to the group Americans support Israel

New Israeli Ambassador a 'Conservative Ideologue'

U.S.-born Ron Dermer will assume the post of Israel's ambassador to the United States this fall ? and he faces significant challenges.

Among them is establishing healthy relations with the Obama administration and maintaining support for Israel in Congress, according to Alan Elsner, vice president for communications for J Street.

"Dermer must overcome his reputation as a conservative ideologue if he wants to forge good working relations with a Democratic administration," Elsner writes in an op-ed piece for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

"The same is true in Congress where the new ambassador will be welcomed with open arms by Republicans but may face initial suspicion from some on the Democratic side of the aisle.

"Israel needs all the supporters it can get from both parties ? so leaning one way or the other, or even appearing to lean, is not only inappropriate but a recipe for disaster."

J Street describes itself as a pro-Israel advocacy group whose stated aim is to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts.

Dermer must also nurture the crucial relationship between Israel and the Jewish community in America, Elsner posits.

He writes: "Any Israeli ambassador must accept the American Jewish community as it is: predominantly progressive on economic and social issues and dovish on foreign policy."

Dermer was born and raised in Miami Beach, Fla., where his father served as mayor in the late 1960s. He moved to Israel in 1996, and in 2005 became economic envoy at the Israeli embassy in Washington, which required him to give up his U.S. citizenship.

He went on to become a close adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and on July 9 it was announced that he would become the new Israeli ambassador, replacing Michael Oren.

Elsner adds: "American Jews do care about Israel, but an overwhelming majority believes that reaching peace with the Palestinians based on a two-state solution is vital if Israel is to remain democratic and a homeland for the Jewish people.

"We look forward to a fruitful and constructive relationship with Ambassador Dermer."

A Lame Duck Is Walking Again Thanks to a 3D Printed Foot

A Lame Duck Is Walking Again Thanks to a 3D Printed Foot

Buttercup the duck was born with his left foot turned backwards, making it nearly impossible and extremely painful to walk. But now he's waddling again with a 3D-printed foot.

Buttercup was born in a high school biology lab in November. Because of his bum foot he was given to Feathered Angels Waterfowl Sanctuary in Arlington, Tennessee. The organization's Mike Garey, a software engineer, adopted Buttercup, and began searching out solutions to get Buttercup walking again. He landed on 3D modeling company, NovaCopy, which 3D printed Buttercup a brand new webbed foot, based on photos of Buttercup's sister Minnie's left foot.

A Lame Duck Is Walking Again Thanks to a 3D Printed Foot

NovaCopy knew that traditional plastic used in a lot of 3D printers wouldn't work because the material is too stiff. Instead, it created a mould that was used to cast a more malleable silicone foot for Buttercup. The cast is attached to Buttercup's leg with a sheath, sort of like a flexible silicone sock. And last night, Buttercup's adopted dad finally finished attaching the prosthetic, and Buttercup is waddling like a happy, normal duck. You can see a first look of the new foot in action in this video Garey shot last night:

Every time you think of a stupid, dinky 3D-printed toy you don't give a crap about, just remember that there is an adorable duck out there walking thanks to the very same process. [Feathered Angels, Buttercup the Duck via CNET via TreeHugger]
