ASUS teases October 23rd Vivo Book and Vivo Tab event, likens it to world history (video)

ASUS teases October 23rd Vivo Book and Vivo Tab event, likens it to world history video

Most event teasers have at least some kind of grandiosity; we're not under illusions that they have to be modest. At the same time, ASUS may have crossed a humility barrier with a teaser for an October 23rd event launching its upcoming Vivo Tabs and (possibly TAICHI- or Transformer Book-linked) Vivo Books. In the space of 42 seconds, ASUS likens the New York City announcement for its touchscreen Windows 8 devices to the Apollo moon missions, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and having a child -- a bit much for slabs of aluminum and glass, we think. There's not much to see of the systems themselves beyond what we already know, although Notebook Italia has noticed at least one reseller listing a Vivo Book S200 laptop with an 11.6-inch touchscreen, a Core i3, 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive for €499 ($647). That price would go a long way towards ASUS' promise of making touch "available to everyone..." we're just not convinced it's as important as Elvis.

Space shuttle pauses on 12-mile trip to LA museum

(AP) ? At its prime, the space shuttle Endeavour circled the globe at 17,500 mph, faster than a speeding bullet.

In retirement, it's crawling along the streets of Los Angeles at a sluggish 2 mph, a pace that rush-hour commuters can sympathize with.

Endeavour's two-day, 12-mile road trip to the California Science Center where it will be put on display kicked off around midnight Friday. Rolled on a 160-wheeled carrier, it left from a hangar at the Los Angeles International Airport, passing diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs, and reached city streets about two hours later.

Hundreds of spectators waiting in the predawn darkness snapped photos and gaped as the 170,000-pound Endeavour inched by with its tail towering over streetlights and its wings spanning the roadway. Some had pajama-clad children in tow.

The shuttle made stop-and-go progress, with some halts to check its balance and to prune trees in its path as it rolled past strip malls and storefronts.

In a massive feat of parallel parking, the shuttle was backed into a shopping center parking lot around 5:30 a.m. ? later than expected.

Janet Dion, a family therapist from nearby Manhattan Beach, was in awe to see the shuttle, its sides weathered by millions of miles in space and two dozen re-entries.

"It's exciting to see the tiles up close, especially the texture of the tiles," she said. "It's amazing. You can almost feel the fabric of it, like a skin. Like our skin."

Endeavour will remain at the parking lot for a nine-hour layover as crews worked to widen the carrier so that it could straddle the median during the next part of the trip. It was expected to move again in early afternoon then stop for several more hours to transfer to a special dolly for the cross over the busy Interstate 405 at night.

Ushering a shuttle through an urban core is a logistical challenge that took almost a year to plan. Guarded by a security detail reminiscent of a presidential visit, police enforced rolling street and sidewalk closures as early as Thursday night in some locations and discouraged spectators from swarming side streets.

The behemoth transport has caused headaches for shopkeepers along the route who counted on cheering crowds jamming the curbs to boost business.

In the days leading up to Endeavour's move, the owners of Randy's Donuts sold shuttle-shaped pastries emblazoned with the NASA logo and even hung a shuttle replica inside the giant doughnut hole sign visible from the busy Interstate 405.

Co-owner Larry Weintraub planned to watch the shuttle creep by the roadside sign, which has been featured in several movies. But the store, which serves up sweets 24-7, will be closed Friday night.

"I'm still excited, but I'm disappointed that people aren't going to be able to stand in the streets and shout 'Yay,'" he said.

Saturday is typically the busiest day for James Fugate, who co-owns Eso Won Books in South Los Angeles. But with Endeavour expected to shuffle through, Fugate braced for a ho-hum day in sales.

"We don't close because we're slow. That's when you pull out a book to read," he said.

The baby of the shuttle fleet, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which exploded during liftoff in 1986, killing seven astronauts. It thundered off the launch pad 25 times, orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times and racked up 123 million miles.

Last month, it wowed throngs with a dizzying aerial loop, soaring over the state Capitol, Golden Gate Bridge, Hollywood Sign and other California landmarks while strapped to the back of a modified 747 before finally landing at LAX.

The last leg of Endeavour's retirement journey skips the tourist attractions and instead, winds through blue-collar communities in southern Los Angeles County. While viewing will be severely curtailed due to sidewalk shutdowns, crowds are still expected.

Moving the Endeavour required a specialized carrier typically used to haul oil rigs, bridges and heavy equipment. The wheels can spin in any direction, allowing the shuttle to zigzag past obstacles. An operator walks alongside, controlling the movements via joystick. Several spotters along the wings are on the lookout for hazards.

To make room for the five-story-tall shuttle and its 78-foot wingspan, some 400 trees were chopped down, cable and telephone lines were raised, and steel plates were laid down to protect the streets and underground utilities.

Endeavour will mostly travel on wide boulevards with some boasting as many lanes as a freeway. While there have been advance preparations, there is remaining work to be done during the move, including de-energizing power lines. Southern California Edison warned of outages in the suburb of Inglewood.

One of the trickiest parts involves trundling through a narrow residential street with apartment buildings on both sides. With Endeavour's wings expected to intrude into driveways, residents have been told to stay indoors until the shuttle passes.

The route was selected after ruling out other options. Dismantling the shuttle would have ruined the delicate heat tiles. Helicoptering it to its destination was not feasible. Neither was crossing on freeways since the shuttle is too big to fit through the underpasses. The cost of transporting it cross-town was estimated at over $10 million.

As complex as the latest endeavor is, Southern California is no stranger to moving heavy things.

In 1946, Howard Hughes' "Spruce Goose" aircraft was built in sections and hauled from Culver City to Long Beach, 30 miles away. In 1984, an old United Airlines DC-8, with its wings and tail disassembled, was towed from Long Beach to the science center.

Earlier this year, a two-story-tall chunk of granite was hauled 105 miles from a rock quarry to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

?

The GRAMMY Foundation was established in 1989 to cultivate the understanding, appreciation and advancement of the contribution of recorded music to American culture ? from the artistic and technical legends of the past to the still unimagined musical breakthroughs of future generations of music professionals. The Foundation accomplishes this mission through programs and activities that engage the music industry and cultural community as well as the general public. The Foundation works in partnership year-round with its founder, The Recording Academy?, to bring national attention to important issues such as the value and impact of music and arts education and the urgency of preserving our rich cultural heritage. Campbell's Labels for Education program is proud to be the official education partner of the GRAMMY in the Schools programs. For more information, please visit www.grammyintheschools.com. Plugged In: Marriage: It's All About the Pyrotechnics | Blog | Focus ...

datingcouple.jpgMy wife likes movies with big explosions. And boy, am I glad.

?

It's not because I like big, pyrotechnic-heavy movies myself (though I kinda do). It's not because I'm allergic to chick flicks (because I watch enough of them on the job, thank you very much). It's because our marriage may be healthier because my wife likes The Avengers more than The Notebook.

?

Hey, I have nothing against romance. I have nothing against romances. But it didn't surprise me at all to learn that we often take our cues on what constitutes romance and love from the movies and television shows we watch?and that can be a mistake.

?

According to research out of Albion College, folks who believe that the romantic relationships on television are accurate tend to have more problems in their own real-life relationships. Jeremy Osborn, Albion's research director, said:

?

The rate of marriage failure in the U.S. is not dropping, and it is important for people to have a sense of what factors are leading to the failure of so many relationships. In this study I found that people who believe the unrealistic portrayals on TV are actually less committed to their spouses and think their alternatives to their spouse are relatively attractive. ? My hope would be that people would read this article and take a look at their own relationships and the relationships of those around them. How realistic are your expectations for your partner and where did those expectations come from?

?

Osborn's study was confined to television, but I think it's not just small-screen romances and relationships that impact our views of our partners and how we relate to them. It's what we see on the big screen, too.

?

Take, for example, Mindy from Fox's The Mindy Project. This sitcom protagonist was pretty much weaned on a diet of romcoms, and she believes that she'll know true love when it feels like something out of When Harry Met Sally. So when she gets stuck in an elevator with a charming doctor?a chance meeting complete with spilled papers and flips of the hair and background music (nothing says romance like Muzak), she figures the guy is destined to be her one and only. Alas, reality gets in the way, and the guy winds up getting hitched to someone else. Which leaves Mindy to wonder: Just who's directing this thing, anyway? Doesn't the cosmos understand how relationships work?

?

OK, perhaps it's not best to prove that movies and television affect how we think by using an illustration from a television show. But just look at our own lives. Or, failing that, look at mine.

?

I studied kissing techniques from television (eyes closed, hands on the cheek) way before I ever planted my first smooch on anyone. Movies told me how love should feel way before I felt it for myself. Throughout high school, I gauged girlfriends by how likely I'd be to stand in their front yard and play Peter Gabriel's "Your Eyes" from a boom box. We're not born knowing how this stuff works, after all. And as we grow, we glean as much information as we can from whatever resources are available. Movies and television have long been a primary teacher in the area of amore. I think it's a rare person indeed who didn't take some cues right from the screen.

?

In retrospect, I was pretty lucky to have some other teachers, too. My parents have been married nearly 50 years, and they showed me firsthand that a successful marriage involves more than passionate kisses and dramatic airport scenes. It's about patience and communication and developing mutual interests and, well, more patience.

?

Honestly, my wife and I might've been a little too influenced by media depictions of romance when we first got together. Our first months and years together had some moments of high drama, and it wasn't long before we discovered that our marriage wasn't quite what our movies and television sets had told us to expect. But we've made it 22 years, and we've gotten to the point where it's impossible for us to imagine life without each other. It's not the sort of relationship found in the standard Katherine Heigl movie, perhaps, but it works pretty well.

?

Every once in a while we might pop a romcom in the ol' DVD and watch Julia Roberts bat her eyelashes at Hugh Grant or something. And that's fine. I know my wife isn't exactly like Julia Roberts (she's prettier, for one thing), and she knows I'm nothing like Hugh Grant. Our relationship works, but it doesn't look much like theirs. (I'm prettier than him, too.)

?

Because really, would Julia or Hugh, when watching a sweet romcom together, turn to each other and say, "Wouldn't you rather watch National Treasure?"
