Gary Player says Rory McIlroy has ?talent galore? to become ?the man? -- if he finds ?the right wife.?
Gary Player has become the latest in a growing line of golf's elder statesmen to tell Rory McIlroy that he?s squandering his otherworldly talents by following girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki around the world from tennis match to tennis match rather than dedicating himself to his own craft.
"I love Rory McIlroy, he?s got such talent like you can?t believe it, and I got quite perturbed [to] see him win the U.S. Open and then the next tournament he plays is one month later, the Open Championship. You can?t do that," Player, sounding the same theme that Sir Nick has expounded on incessantly, told My Sporting Life on Saturday (via Geoff Shackelford). "What he should have done was taken a week off after winning the U.S. Open to settle down and then play two tournaments in a row and then come into the Open. You?ve got to prepare properly."
McIlroy, who lost golf's top ranking to Tiger Woods in March and slipped from No. 2 to the third slot after Phil Mickelson won the British Open earlier this month, appeared to be the second coming of Eldrick Tont after lapping the fields at the 2011 U.S. Open and 2012 PGA Championship. Along the way, he picked up the 2012 PGA and European money titles and player of the year honor, which were preludes to his megabucks contract with Nike to start the 2013 season.
Nick Faldo and Johnny Miller, among others, have criticized McIlroy for ditching the Titleist gear that helped him reach the top of his game. They have also opined that the 24-year-old?s love life has distracted him from his true calling.
Player concurred, adding that the "right wife" would put the young lad back on course.
"When you?re in love as a young man, naturally golf seems to take second place for a while," said the nine-time major champion. "That?s natural. Love is still the greatest thing that ever happened in our lives. He?ll come back strong.
"Now the thing is, for a man like Rory, the talent galore, he?s got to make sure he has a woman like I?ve got, who has been married [to me] for 56 years, that has only encouraged me to do well and made all the sacrifices," Player said. "He?s got to be intelligent and find the right wife. If he finds the right wife, if he practices and if he?s dedicated, he could be the man."

It?s Friday, which means that it?s time to look back at the best new music we?ve heard over the last few days. This has been something of a fallow week, so much so that we?re scaling our usual ten-song selection to five ? better to have five quality tracks than pad out with filler, no? And five quality tracks we do indeed have ??there?s a new song from Scott & Charlene?s Wedding, the Darren Sylvester track we premiered earlier this week, a super-secret Dam-Funk demo that?s streaming today only, plus the return of Sebadoh and Crystal Antlers. Click through to get amongst it!
Scott & Charlene?s Wedding ???Wild Heart?
Another new track from the mighty Scott & Charlene?s Wedding ? this is another preview of their new album Any Port in a Storm, which is out on August 13. This is a song for S&CW main man Craig Dermody?s old NYC roommate, and it?s as ingenously charming and heartfelt as everything else we?ve heard from the record so far.
?
Dam-Funk ???Can U Feel This Funk In Me??
Even in a slow week, there?s one man you can rely on to be releasing music ??the ever-prolific Dam-Funk, who just dropped this characteristically liquid funk jam, which is apparently streaming on his Soundcloud for today only. Get cracking!
?
Darren Sylvester ???Dream Or Something Like That?
As premiered here?earlier this week!
-
Sebadoh ???I Will?
Hey, there?s a new Sebadoh album! It?s called Defend Yourself, and it?s out on September 17 ? it?ll be Lou Barlow?s first full-length record under this moniker since 1999, which means that its imminent arrival is pretty exciting. By the sound of this song, he?s lost none of the blearily melodic charm that characterized his previous work. Excellent.
?
Crystal Antlers ???Rattlesnake?
For a moment at the start of this track, it sounds like Crystal Antlers have mellowed somewhat since we last heard them ? but then the drums kick in, the distortion pedals get stomped on, and Johnny Bell starts hollering, ?RATTLESNAKE! RATTLESNAKE!? So, OK, no, they haven?t mellowed at all. But that?s perfectly alright with me.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan should beef up its military's ability to deter and counter missile attacks, including the possible acquisition of the ability to hit enemy bases, the Defence Ministry said, but officials denied this would be used for pre-emptive strikes.
The proposal - Japan's latest step away from the constraints of its pacifist constitution - is part of a review of defense policy by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government, an interim report on which was released on Friday. The final conclusions of the review are due by the end of the year.
The hawkish Abe took office in December for a rare second term, pledging to bolster the military to cope with what Japan sees as an increasingly threatening security environment including an assertive China and an unpredictable North Korea.
Given Japan's strained ties with China over disputed isles and Japan's wartime history, Beijing could react strongly to the proposals, which come after Abe cemented his grip on power with a big win in a weekend election for parliament's upper house.
Article 9 of Japan's constitution, drafted by U.S. occupation forces after the country's defeat in World War Two, renounces the right to wage war and, if taken literally, rules out the very notion of a standing army. In reality, Japan's Self-Defense Forces are one of Asia's strongest militaries.
The Defence Ministry said in the report it was necessary to comprehensively strengthen "the ability to deter and respond to ballistic missiles". But in a sign of the sensitivity of the issue, a ministry official denied that this implied Japan would make pre-emptive strikes against enemy bases.
"Our country is building up ballistic missile defense ... but North Korea and other countries are improving their capabilities," a ministry official told reporters.
"It is necessary to consider whether we should have the option to strike an enemy's missile launch facilities," he said. "But we are not at all thinking about initiating attacks on enemy bases when we are not under attack."
The line between the ability to hit enemy targets and make pre-emptive strikes is primarily political and philosophical, and Japanese officials typically avoid the latter term. But acquiring the capability for pre-emptive strikes against enemy missile bases would be difficult and costly, experts said.
"Offensive capability can be used for pre-emptive purposes," said Narushige Michishita, a professor at the National Graduate Institute of Policy Studies. "In reality, we will not be able to. We are just too far away."
STRETCHING THE LIMITS
Japan has for decades chipped away at the restrictions of Article 9. It has long said it has the right to attack enemy bases overseas when the intention to attack Japan is evident, the threat is imminent and there are no other defense options.
But while previous administrations shied away from acquiring the hardware to do so, Abe's Liberal Democratic Party in June urged the government to consider acquiring that capability against missile threats.
Some experts say acquiring more substantial offensive capability would be a fundamental change for Japan's defense policies. Others see it as a more evolutionary development.
"It is part of an evolution towards having a more normal military posture," said Richard Samuels, director of the MIT-Japan Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Normal means being able to defend yourself."
Japan already has limited attack capability but being able to hit mobile missile launchers in North Korea - the most likely target - would require more attack aircraft and intelligence for which Japan would probably need to rely on its ally, the United States, experts said. Hitting missile bases in mainland China would be an even bigger stretch.
Whether Japan, with a huge public debt, can afford the bill, is another big question.
Measures to strike enemy missile facilities include attacks by aircraft or missiles and sending soldiers directly to the site, the Defence Ministry official said, but he added it was too early to discuss specific steps.
The ministry also said it would consider buying unmanned surveillance drones, create a force of Marines to protect remote islands, such as those disputed with China, and consider beefing up the ability to transport troops to far-flung isles.
Japan should also review its self-imposed ban on arms exports that has already been eased to let Japanese contractors take part in international projects and take new steps if needed, the ministry said in its report.
Clearer guidelines as to companies may sell and to whom could help Japanese defense contractors such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd, and Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd seek business overseas.
Support has grown in Japan for a more robust military because of concern about China, but opposition also remains.
Japan last updated its National Defence Programme Guidelines in 2010, when the Democratic Party of Japan was in power.
Those changes shifted Japan away from a Cold War legacy of defending northern areas to a more flexible defense against incursions from the south, the site of the row with China over tiny, uninhabited islands.

Stanford, a research and teaching university in Northern California's Silicon Valley, ranked No. 1, jumping from third place last year after scoring high marks for retention rates and high graduate starting salaries. It has 19,945 students and annual costs are $58,846.
Much smaller Pomona College, with 1,586 students and an annual bill of $57,041, was in second place. The college, about 30 miles (50 km) east of Los Angeles, offers only undergraduate degrees.
"For the first time in the six years Forbes has produced this list, the top two schools are on the Pacific Coast," Forbes said in an article on Wednesday accompanying the list at www.forbes.com/top-colleges.
Princeton University in New Jersey, which was No. 1 last year, slipped to third place, followed by Yale University in Connecticut in fourth place and Columbia University in New York City at No. 5.
Costs at the top five schools ranged from $54,789 at Princeton to $61,640 at Columbia.
The Forbes ranking of 650 US colleges and universities, calculated by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, is based on student satisfaction, post-graduate success, student debt, graduation rate and national competitive awards.
Massachusetts had the most schools in the top 10 with Harvard University at No. 8, slipping from No. 6 last year; Williams College in ninth place and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at No. 10.
The University of California, Berkeley, which came in 22nd on the list, was ranked as the best state school in the country. Twenty-three public schools ranked in the top 100.
"Flagship state schools offer an excellent education for much lower tuition bills than their average private counterparts. As more students are seeking to hold down debt, public colleges and universities can and will be more selective," Forbes said.
Among top-tier Ivy League schools, New York's Cornell University rose to 19th on this year's list from No. 51 in 2012. The University of Pennsylvania ranked No. 11, Brown University in Rhode Island came in at No. 12 and Dartmouth in New Hampshire was No. 16.
Morehouse College in Atlanta made the biggest leap in the ranking, jumping 235 places to No. 285.

New Israeli Ambassador a 'Conservative Ideologue'
U.S.-born Ron Dermer will assume the post of Israel's ambassador to the United States this fall ? and he faces significant challenges.
Among them is establishing healthy relations with the Obama administration and maintaining support for Israel in Congress, according to Alan Elsner, vice president for communications for J Street.
"Dermer must overcome his reputation as a conservative ideologue if he wants to forge good working relations with a Democratic administration," Elsner writes in an op-ed piece for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
"The same is true in Congress where the new ambassador will be welcomed with open arms by Republicans but may face initial suspicion from some on the Democratic side of the aisle.
"Israel needs all the supporters it can get from both parties ? so leaning one way or the other, or even appearing to lean, is not only inappropriate but a recipe for disaster."
J Street describes itself as a pro-Israel advocacy group whose stated aim is to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts.
Dermer must also nurture the crucial relationship between Israel and the Jewish community in America, Elsner posits.
He writes: "Any Israeli ambassador must accept the American Jewish community as it is: predominantly progressive on economic and social issues and dovish on foreign policy."
Dermer was born and raised in Miami Beach, Fla., where his father served as mayor in the late 1960s. He moved to Israel in 1996, and in 2005 became economic envoy at the Israeli embassy in Washington, which required him to give up his U.S. citizenship.
He went on to become a close adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and on July 9 it was announced that he would become the new Israeli ambassador, replacing Michael Oren.
Elsner adds: "American Jews do care about Israel, but an overwhelming majority believes that reaching peace with the Palestinians based on a two-state solution is vital if Israel is to remain democratic and a homeland for the Jewish people.
"We look forward to a fruitful and constructive relationship with Ambassador Dermer."

Buttercup the duck was born with his left foot turned backwards, making it nearly impossible and extremely painful to walk. But now he's waddling again with a 3D-printed foot.
Buttercup was born in a high school biology lab in November. Because of his bum foot he was given to Feathered Angels Waterfowl Sanctuary in Arlington, Tennessee. The organization's Mike Garey, a software engineer, adopted Buttercup, and began searching out solutions to get Buttercup walking again. He landed on 3D modeling company, NovaCopy, which 3D printed Buttercup a brand new webbed foot, based on photos of Buttercup's sister Minnie's left foot.
NovaCopy knew that traditional plastic used in a lot of 3D printers wouldn't work because the material is too stiff. Instead, it created a mould that was used to cast a more malleable silicone foot for Buttercup. The cast is attached to Buttercup's leg with a sheath, sort of like a flexible silicone sock. And last night, Buttercup's adopted dad finally finished attaching the prosthetic, and Buttercup is waddling like a happy, normal duck. You can see a first look of the new foot in action in this video Garey shot last night:
Every time you think of a stupid, dinky 3D-printed toy you don't give a crap about, just remember that there is an adorable duck out there walking thanks to the very same process. [Feathered Angels, Buttercup the Duck via CNET via TreeHugger]

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Members of Nelson Mandela's family as well as South African Cabinet ministers have visited the hospital where the 94-year-old former president is critically ill.
One of Mandela's daughters, Makaziwe Mandela, was among family members who arrived at the Pretoria hospital on Friday. The ministers of health and defense also visited, the South African Press Association reported.
The anti-apartheid leader was taken to the hospital on June 8 to be treated for what the government said was a recurring lung infection. South Africans have held prayers nationwide, and many have left flowers and messages of support outside the hospital as well as his home in Johannesburg.
On Thursday, the office of South African President Jacob Zuma said Mandela's health had improved overnight, and that his condition was critical but stable.

Hawke and Delpy remain as charming as ever, and their combined goofiness is more endearing than annoying.
Love is messy here, life cannot be controlled, satisfaction is far from guaranteed. Romance is rocky at best. But romance still is.
Though "Before Midnight" is often uncomfortable to watch, it's never less than mesmerizing - and ultimately, a joy to walk with this prickly but fascinating couple again.
"Before Midnight" is heartbreaking, but not because of Jesse and Celine. It's the filmmakers' passions that seem to have cooled.
Before Midnight is fascinating to watch, and so long as Celine and Jesse are communicating, there's still hope.
How (Jesse and Celine) try to rekindle that flame is what drives Midnight, a film that feels so authentic it's like overhearing a conversation you're not sure you should be hearing.
Loving words mix with personal attacks, the magic moments with the unintended slights, as we witness the occasional desperation of imperfect people doing the best they can when life moves beyond meet-cute and courtship. That's authentic.
Linklater and his players bring an end to the fantasy and welcome the thrilling ups and bitter downs of reality to this love story.
Like the first two films, it reflects the real world in a way that seems almost preternatural. It's just that, here, the real world is a harsher, more disappointing place.
The duo, clearly so comfortable in their characters' skin, indulge in intelligent banter, sharp humour and emotional truths.
So much better written than contemporary novels, this film is a literary as well as cinematic achievement to cherish. For grown-ups.
As before, it's often very funny, with Jesse and Celine swapping Woody Allen-esque one-liners - nicely snarky, appealingly abrasive.
The acting, the dialogue and direction are superb.
None of the films is faultless in itself, but, tinted with complementary tones, the complete cycle comes as close to perfection as any trilogy in cinema history.
Marvelous. It's impossible to shake the feeling that we are merely eavesdropping on reality. Witty, wise, and -- most important of all -- truly romantic in ways that movies usually aren't.
It's been 18 years since Hawke, Delpy and Linklater introduced us to Jesse and Celine, and their story just gets richer, funnier and more punchy each time we see them. In 1995's Before Sunrise, they were idealistic 23-year-olds.
Hawke and Delpy are as believably real as any screen couple can ever be.
This is one of the few sequels for which the cliche 'eagerly awaited' is truly applicable.
Predictably, it's just as great as the first two.
By the end, Before Midnight inches towards a dawn of charm. But it's a troubled trip.
As an organic experiment in collaboration between actors and director, it is a triumph, co-created and co-owned by Delpy, Linklater and Hawke.
Hawke and Delpy, who are both credited on the script too, have never found co-stars to bounce off more nimbly or bring out richer nuances in their acting.
The performances and dialogue are wonderfully naturalistic; a reminder that the best special effects are often the cheapest.
Before Midnight is about the nature of long-term relationships, and the way love deepens and grows but also finds itself subject to the complications of maturity. Smart, insightful, and poignant.
For those who witnessed Jesse and Celine's tentative getting together as inter railing students almost twenty years ago, it's reassuring to see them still in love.
Brilliantly directed, superbly written and impeccably acted, this is a thoroughly enjoyable, thought-provoking and emotionally engaging drama that perfectly complements the previous two films.

Yahoo News asked Americans to comment on President Barack Obama's climate change plan, parts of which he unveiled in a speech on Tuesday. Below are excerpted responses we received.
***
Plan is devastating for way of life in coalfields: Living near Roanoke in the coalfields of southwest Virginia, it was difficult to continue to hope for economic recovery in this region after President Obama's recent speech. The cities, towns and communities in the area are dependent on one thing: coal.
Obama's words are a final bell sadly tolling this truth: Our way of life is over. If Obama's proposals go through, it will decimate our already languishing economy.
Obama ignores the dark side to the utopian goal of reducing carbon emissions by destroying the coal industry?the truth. Renewable sources of energy are incredibly expensive, undependable and inefficient. Few sources of energy are as cheap and reliable as coal. Rapidly changing energy sources will lead to rising energy costs for households and businesses throughout the nation when few can afford it.
?Lyn Brooks, Roanoke, Va.
***
Seeing both sides: I live in a small town in West Virginia?"coal mine country"?and home to two coal-fired AEP power plants, with another right across the Ohio River in view. The coal mines, the former top industry in West Virginia, have been closed already, which has resulted in thousands of jobs lost for families in this state. And while a lot of the union and power plant workers have found steady work during plant outages and keeping up with the EPA's new regulations on the scrubbers and more, thousands of workers face the inevitability of losing work around here permanently. One of the two power plants was just recently shut down.
I also know the effects of global warming on this planet. Obama is right that we need to act now. The president is on the right track with creating renewable energy sources in this country, and the only way to attempt to mend the damage caused by global warming, prevent future devastation (and catastrophe), and create jobs, thereby elevating our economy, is to see these proposals through.
?Ruqaiyya Noor, New Haven, W.V.
***
Obama's climate speech lacks sexiness: According to a 2008 report from the United Nations Statistics Division, a U.N. division which ensures environmental sustainability and integrates the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs to reverse the loss of environmental resources, the millennium development goals indicators state that China's annual emissions at 7,031,916 accounts for 23.5 percent of the world's emissions and the United States closely behind with 5,461,014 and 18.27 percent of the world's emissions.
Obama says, "So I know these standards don't sound all that sexy, but think of it this way: That's the equivalent of planting 7.6 billion trees and letting them grow for 10 years?all while doing the dishes. It is a great deal and we need to be doing it."
Why has it taken so long to get something done?
?Michael Drentea, San Diego***
The wrong direction: The American people are struggling to survive and we must help them by expanding the economy and giving them new job opportunities. This plan does the exact opposite. Republican critics in Congress are calling his plan a job-killer that will threaten the economic recovery. We are pulling the rug out from underneath the millions who are struggling to survive.
?Mathew Paul, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
***
'President of hope' owes U.S. more on environment: The president said Tuesday at Georgetown University, "As a president, as a father and as an American, I'm here to say we need to act." This San Francisco father and American agrees. Communities, corporations and humanity must change their behavior. Obama's proposed regulations, incentives and renewables permitting are similarly right, though inadequate. They're feasible examples for future improvement.
First change: Learn these ABCs of species survival. Each person, in every way possible, must make the changes indicated. They are vast, like political will for deferred gratification. (For instance: "We won't build pipelines we can't make clean.") They are immeasurably small?coffee cups re-used, not thrown away to decay and release CO2. These changes are survival imperatives.
?Robert Gunter, San Francisco
***
A solution in search of a problem: President Obama's environmental/green energy agenda has already failed the test of the democratic process. Even when Congress was controlled entirely by Democrats, it recoiled from passing cap and trade. So the president intends to use executive orders and the regulatory process to get his way no matter what Congress or the people think.
The result of all of this, if not stopped, will be a punch in the gut to the weak economy, a loss of jobs, and all for no purpose whatsoever except, as an adviser stated according to the Weekly Standard, to wage a "war on coal."
?Mark Whittington, Houston
***
Leadership when change is needed: Maybe there is hope for humanity after all.
President Obama is finally taking a firm stand on the environment. While unlikely to please everyone, his newly released Climate Action Plan at least promises to break through the political stalemate surrounding climate change, and start us moving in the right direction.
At least as important as the technical solutions Obama offers is the spirit in which he offers them. He refuses to buy into the myth that what's good for the planet is necessarily bad for business.
Change can be difficult, but it is inevitable. It's about time our country began to address climate change in a spirit of leadership rather than fear.
?Anne Michelsen, Champaign County, Ill.
***
Obama emits policy-changing cloud: In his 2008 Democratic nominee victory speech, Barack Obama proclaimed that, generations from now, his win will be remembered as the "?moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal ?" That was five years ago.
Apparently, tide-lowering and planet-healing aren't progressing quickly enough for President Obama. On Tuesday, he emitted some foul smoke of his own as he outlined his plans for climate change regulations with or without congressional approval.
Polls indicate Americans are most concerned with jobs and the economy, so Obama shoves his climate change agenda into the faces of 760,000 people who rely on coal for earning their livelihood?shoves his pet pipe dream into the faces of all of us who will pay higher prices for everything, from electricity to groceries.
Only six months into his second term, this president is in "legacy" mode. Come hell or high water, he's bestowing upon us his lofty footprints.

The only thing worse than getting on a full subway car where there's no place to sit, is getting on an even fuller subway car where there's no place to brace yourself. But here's a brilliant hack that not only guarantees you've always got something secure to hold onto, but also something no one else has put their dirty hands on: a toilet plunger.

A line formed outside Ameriana Bank in Westfield Saturday, as pet owners showed up to get free microchips for their dogs and cats.
The Bank partners with the Humane Society for Hamilton County to put on the yearly event. It?s one of many free microchip events offered by local humane societies.
?It?s something that has to be done if you?re a pet owner,? Jennifer Judd, with Hamilton County Humane, said.
First in line was Stephanie Garst?s family from Arcadia. They made the thirty minute drive to get three dogs microchipped.
?She got loose last week and I was worrying all day whether she was gonna stay at home or take off on me,? Garst said of one of her dogs.
Garst knows firsthand what a microchip can do. She lost her old dog once and because he had a microchip, getting him home was a breeze.
?He was able to come straight back home within 12 hours,? Garst said.
Last month, Fox 59 highlighted a phenomenon called ?dog flipping,? where people falsely claim pets online and then resell them on Craigslist or other websites. One dog, Rosie, fell victim to the scam but with the help of strangers, was returned to her rightful owner who immediately had her microchipped.
?All too often we hear of pets being stolen or just lost and can?t be found, and with this microchip its an easy enough scan,? Rob Garrett with Ameriana Bank said.
Plus it?s an easy, nearly painless, process. It?s just like a shot and the microchip, the size of a grain of rice, embeds under the skin to later be scanned.
?I would definitely suggest it to anybody,? Garst said.
If you?d like to get a microchip for your own pet, visit your local humane society or check their website for free events like this one near you.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The American Cancer Society ? one of the nation's best known and influential health advocacy groups ? is 100 years old this week.
Back in 1913 when it was formed, cancer was a lesser threat for most Americans. The biggest killers then were flu, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and stomach bugs. At a time when average life expectancy was 47, few lived long enough to get cancer.
But 15 doctors and businessmen in New York City thought cancer deserved serious attention, so they founded the American Society for the Control of Cancer. The modern name would come 31 years later.
The cancer society's rise coincided with the taming of infectious diseases and lengthening life spans. "Cancer is a disease of aging, so as people live longer there will be more cancer," explained Dr. Michael Kastan, executive director of Duke University's Cancer Institute.
Cancer became the nation's No. 2 killer in 1938, a ranking it has held ever since. It also became perhaps the most feared disease ? the patient's own cells growing out of control, responding only to brutal treatments: surgery, radiation and poisonous chemicals.
The cancer society is credited with being the largest and most visible proponent of research funding, prevention and programs to help house and educate cancer patients.
Last year, the organization had revenues of about $925 million. It employs 6,000 and has 3 million volunteers, calling itself the largest voluntary health organization in the nation.
"The American Cancer Society really is in a league of its own," Kastan said. The rate of new cancer cases has been trending downward ever so slightly.
Some historical highlights:
1913 ? The American Society for the Control of Cancer is founded in New York City.
1944 ? The organization is renamed the American Cancer Society. The change is spurred by Mary Lasker, the wife of advertising mogul Albert Lasker.
1946 ? A research program is launched, built on $1 million raised by Mary Lasker. A year later, Dr. Sidney Farber of Boston announces the first successful chemotherapy treatment.
1948 ? The cancer society pushes the Pap test, which has been credited with driving a 70 percent decline in uterine and cervical cancer.
1964 ? Prodded by the cancer society and other groups, U.S. Surgeon General Luther Terry issues a report irrefutably linking smoking to cancer.
1971 ? The cancer society helps lead passage of the National Cancer Act to ramp up research money. President Nixon declares a national "war on cancer," which becomes an extended effort derided by some as a "medical Vietnam."
1976 ? The cancer society suggests women 40 and older consider a mammogram if their mother or sisters had breast cancer.
1976 ? The cancer society hosts a California event to encourage smokers to quit for the day. A year later, the annual Great American Smokeout is launched nationally.
1988 ? Atlanta becomes headquarters for the society.
1997 ? The cancer society recommends yearly mammograms for women over 40.
2000 ? Dr. Brian Druker of Oregon reports the first success with "targeted" cancer therapy.
2003 ? The cancer society stops recommending monthly breast self-exams. But it continues to urge annual mammograms for most women over 40, even after a government task force says most don't need screening until 50.
2012 ? The cancer society reports the rate of new cancer cases has been inching down by about half a percent each year since 1999.

Ocean Reef Club, a private, member-owned community in Key Largo, Fla., has won a Florida Worksite Wellness Award. Ocean Reef was the winner in the mid-size employer category, for businesses with 500 to 1,000 employees.
The program honors Florida companies that demonstrate a commitment to employee wellness and whose programs produce positive health outcomes.
The award was presented by the Florida Heart Research Institute, in partnership with the Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade, an initiative of the Miami-Dade County Health Department.
?At Ocean Reef Club, I believe our wellness initiatives allow our employees to feel cared for and valued,? said Paul Astbury, President. ?We strive to give our employees the tools they need to make healthful decisions. Ultimately, we want to inspire our staff to engage in their own wellness and the wellness of their families.?
Among the wellness initiatives that earned praise from judges were:
*?????? An onsite caf? for employees that features daily healthful offerings, and meals that are considered healthy are at a reduced price. Nutrition classes, cooking classes and demos, one-on-one nutritional counseling and Weight Watchers are available throughout the year.
* ?????Fitness classes, including Zumba, spin, boot camp, yoga and pilates, are free for employees, along with use of paddleboards, kayaks and sailboats. The club?s golf and tennis pros offer reduced-price weekly lessons. Two gyms are available for employees, plus free bicycles to get around the property.
*?????? Regular lectures on heart disease, diabetes education, high blood pressure and other issues relevant to the staff are available. The club also has its own onsite medical center.
*?????? A bi-weekly wellness newsletter and a staff-dedicated intranet keep the club?s nearly 1,000 employees up-to-date on all wellness initiatives and incentives, as well as mandatory safety training and monthly AED/CPR class. In recognition of the diverse staff population, communications are available in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole.
?Some companies measure the success of their wellness program in terms of statistical benchmarks related to retention and productivity,? said Astbury. ?For us, our greatest success comes from knowing that we have a healthy, engaged workforce.?

Some of us have a tendency to accumulate a lot more possessions than others. Whether you own a business, have multiple properties, or just have lots of things to keep track of, Inventory List can help. Unlike profesional inventory apps, Inventory List lets you add things and track them in your own way through the use of storage banks and locations.
There are lots of subscription inventory options out there but not all of us need that many features. Inventory List makes a pretty happy medium without being too over the top. The first thing you'll be asked to do is start adding locations and storage banks. Inventory List works as a nested hierarchy in order to keep track of your items with the top most level being a physical geographical location. For many of us this will be home, office, summer home, beach house, or any other location you need to inventory.
After you've created actual places, you can move on to creating locations within that space. For homes, this may be kitchen, bedroom, bathroom while at work it could be storage room, waiting room, or any other space you have a need to inventory items for. You'll also be given one more location spot that is nested so you can drill down to items such as cabinets, storage bins, or something else. I personally found this space better suited for categories instead of locations where I like to break things up into electronics, furniture, or any other category of item I'd like to inventory.
To add an item to Inventory List, you'll have to be drilled down all the way inside a physical location, space, and secondary space. This is one feature I wasn't too crazy about. Some people won't have a need for the secondary space and since categories are already supported when creating items, it seems redundant. A nice option would be for the user to be able to choose whether or not they even need that second location classification within settings and have the ability to disable it.
Once you're drilled down into a list, you can start adding individual items or quantities of a specific item. You can include a name, price, SKU (only if you want), a photo, and additional notes. This item will then be shown inside that list. You can also toggle between locations and individual inventory items on the home menu of Inventory List.
When it comes to syncing your items, Inventory List supports Dropbox sync and CSV export which should help keep active backups of all your items in case you ever needed to restore them or share them with others.
Inventory List is really made for people that have a large amount of items to track such as contractors or property managers. If you're in one of these professions, Inventory List is a must have. It's also great for self employed individuals or those who many have storage units they'd like to keep a better handle on.
iPhone owners who aren't self employed or work with a moving inventory won't find much need for it, but those that haven't yet found a solution they're happy with should definitely give Inventory List a hard look.
