The new iPhone 5 ads from Apple are, in my opinion, awesome. So awesome, in fact, that I think having the great Jeff Daniels provide the narration may actually diminish them somewhat.?
The ad, the message, the look, the technology -- the phone -- can fully stand on its own, without help from Hollywood.
That said, of all the new iPhone ads, my favorite is the "thumb" one.
I have written, long before bloggers began predicting what the new iPhone (5) would look like, that Apple would have to go big with the device.?
Even if they really did not want to.
As I said many times, Apple believes the iPhone (4-) design is, well, perfect. Yes, it could get thinner, lighter, but the core design is perfect.?
Only, the market disagreed.
The market wanted...bigger! Because, as with televisions, it's all about the screen and we mortals want a bigger screen.?
Except...sometimes we don't know. Sometimes, we walk into a Verizon retail store and are wow'd by that big Samsung Galaxy and make the decision on the spot that that is the smartphone for us. Only, we forget that we will have this with us all the time. We will carry it with us all the time, use it constantly, and the benefit of the big screen may in fact, in practice, turn out to be, well, not as great as we had hoped. For example, having to use two hands to (always) operate a smartphone is inherently stupid.?
What is Apple to do??
They know that *millions* of people are charmed by that big bright screen but they also know that design suggests that big screen is simply too big for continued use.?
They come up with the iPhone 5. A bigger screen -- taller, but not wider. This is a clear bow to the marketplace.?
Only, it's still not as big as some other smartphones. Apple has to remind us -- teach us -- that this is wise. We should want a bigger screen but *only* one big enough to (always) use with one hand.?
This ad is as much a teaching device as a marketing device. And I think it works great.
