The death of four children at the Ashaley Botwe Lakeside near Accra adds to the unfortunate statistics of kids dying tragically this year. From Kumasi to Accra, children have lost their lives in freaky accidents in manners defying logic. While some have died in abandoned vehicles, others were electrocuted.
One of such tragedies befell a family in East Legon and just as the memory of that painful death is about fading away, we have another one visiting us. We empathise with the bereaved families on the painful death of the four children and pray that their parents in particular take consolation from the fact that the four lives have returned to their maker who brought them to this ephemeral world. Innocent lives, they have returned to their maker. This is all we mortals can say to heal the wounds their tragic departure has left on our memories.
Even as the hurt parents shed tears, they should reflect on the spiritual dimension of man on this ephemeral earth and be consoled accordingly.
Their compatriots across the country are all touched by what befell them and join them in spirit in praying for them to develop the appropriate fortitude to traverse these painful moments.
At such mournful moments, bereaved families need the support of sympathizers, especially family members, and gladly these are not in short supply in our dear nation.
It is troubling to note that children continue to die tragically not from disease but such unfathomable accidents. We therefore implore parents to be mindful about certain characteristics of child upbringing and be guided accordingly.
These are stressful moments for the parents of the kids but suffice it to point out certain realities about children which we ignore at the peril of our children.
Male children, especially between the ages of eight and 12, are very adventurous and so require additional responsibility on the part of parents when they are not at school and especially have the penchant for joining friends on idle expeditions.
Such extra responsibility is more pronounced when there are bodies of water in the vicinity of their homes. When they are not engaged at home, such male children would join friends in the neighbourhood to go looking for adventure such as catching fish.
That was exactly what happened to the four children and it is painful to recall the incident, even as we compose this piece.
We admit the challenges in curbing the movements of male children, given the fact that it is almost impossible to keep them indoors throughout.
Being mindful about how long they stay outside their homes is one thing we should not lose sight of as parents. This way, we would be able to raise the alarm bell when danger beckons.
May the souls of the departed ones rest in the bosom of their maker and grant their parents the fortitude to bear the loss.
